slayships Posted August 8, 2022 Posted August 8, 2022 I'm really confused by this? Anyone can catch this right? Its not just LGBT+ people? But is there something LGBT people are doing that makes us more vulnerable or does it just so happen to be higher in the community and will spread out eventually? Ive read so much conflicting stuff and I am worried

It's not just sex and it is a bit misleading to say something like this without context considering it's not a sexual transmitted disease. Regardless of anyone's sex habits, the community tends to isolate itself 'cause that's what communities do. When I had covid, I got it during a Pride march and I infected at least 5/6 other LGBTQI+ individuals. Monkeypox is transmitted by contact (there's even an aereal transmission if close, aka a normal night out clubbing) , not sex. I could get it simply by hanging out with a friend of mine, touching his hand or hugging him. Of course anyone can catch this, but it is far from surprising that LGBTQI+ individuals infect other LGBTQI+ individuals, and that's unfortunately (or luckily if we get access to the vaccine before everyone else) how it seems this monkeypox wave originated in the first place. Vermillion Posted August 8, 2022 Posted August 8, 2022 Ton of clarity in the video below on numerous issues surrounding this. Context: This was posted before U.S. declared a national health emergency. Especially trouble with numerous positive patients getting access to the the medication TPox.
Vermillion Posted August 8, 2022 Posted August 8, 2022 Yale epidemiologist Gregg Gonsalves calls FDA/NIH plan to "split" monkeypox doses into fifths a "risky strategy" given rate of spread Likely won't start until NIH study on effectiveness from the split doses for more vaccines finishes, which is expected to take "weeks"

So many people here think that it's solely because of promiscuity. While it is indeed true that a subset of gay men have many partners, that explains only the rapid spread within our community, rather than why it is mostly confined to us. Once an infectious disease enters a specific population as opposed to the general population, it tends to stay within that specific population so long as behaviors stay the same. Men who have sex with men will generally only have intimate contact with other LGBTQ+ men, therefore keeping it confined to that group. I'm so sick of users acting like it's strictly a sex thing that gay men should be ashamed of Exactly. That's why it's very important that countries provide the community with a fair enough amount of vaccines. And that's also why it would be relatively "easy" to overcome this emergency contrary to the likes of COVID etc. As of now, as evidence suggests, it is still confined in a limited amount of population, therefore it should be easier to contain it.
A Bomb Posted August 8, 2022 Posted August 8, 2022 Phew, got the first dose this morning. They just said to do a walk-in a month from now. They had been told the current plan for that date will be to only administer second doses then.
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted August 9, 2022 ATRL Moderator Posted August 9, 2022 Scheduled my vaccine for Friday.
Vermillion Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 God ****ing DAMN IT. They're starting this likely tomorrow afternoon JUST before my Wednesday appointment Good luck getting the nurses to do intradermal shots properly without bruising or worse Those of you that got the full shot are lucky
Protocol Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 4 hours ago, Hector said: There are a lot of closeted men around the world, many in countries where being gay is illegal or will get you fired, who are going to be lying and saying they have COVID or something to avoid going out as they suffer in excruciating silence at home. This is the result of it being branded a "gay disease" (which, statistically, it kind of is, yes I know it can be spread to anyone but it's spreading mostly in gay male sexual networks right now and the great majority of cases are gay men).
FreeXone Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 So is it a fast spread or a low spread. Pretty much everyone I know is getting vaccinated but will it stop the trend? I just hope I can get the second dose. I will be traveling high and low for it!
