Ichinaru19 Posted September 24, 2022 Posted September 24, 2022 Love to see her having a nice opening Sawayama really grew her popularity and rightfully so

ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted September 24, 2022 ATRL Moderator Posted September 24, 2022 My first listen now and...imagine not liking Catch Me In The Air
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted September 24, 2022 ATRL Moderator Posted September 24, 2022 Just finished, stunning album. I am so mad at myself for not listening just until now. I prefer this to Sawayama actually Also, I don't get the 'this is just for the gays' comments, when there are so many more themes intertwined here (messed up child-parent relationship, strict household, religion etc.). I feel it's quite a diverse album while also being extremely personal. Also, to me it sounds like a Gaga-esque album, which I stan. Whoever is comparing it to Breakaway has clearly never heard that album because it sounds nothing like it

His description of This Hell alone made me stop watching

I feel it's quite a diverse album while also being extremely personal. I don’t think it’s a reach at all. 3 songs are explicitly about homophobia/being condemned due to sexuality (This Hell, Holy, Send My Love to John), literally every other song with the exception of Catch Me In The Air is centered around the side effects and healing from that kind of trauma, and Catch Me in the Air is about accomplishing her dreams and making her mom proud. Rina’s bi, yes, but I genuinely believe she made this album for herself and the gays. It’s very niche in that sense. Not that I was ever expecting straight dudes to ever blast an album called Hold the Girl. I don’t think Rina could care any less about Fantano’s or RYM’s feelings this time around.

I wasn't saying it's a reach, but I think these other subthemes I mentioned can make it relatable even to a wider audience. Sure, the 3 songs you mentioned are clearly about sexuality, but for example, I feel a lot of it is also about her strict upbringing, which yes, ties to some extent to her being bi, but not all of it. In that sense I meant that e.g. people with strict parents and that had to deal through a lot in their childhood can relate to some of these songs (e.g. Phantom, CMITA, Hurricanes). I do hope she doesn't care about any flopinions, cause the album is excellent
Kh-Loud Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 (edited) I honestly don’t get the hate. This album has at least 5 bops that I can see myself playing repeatedly; that alone already makes it better than most bop albums! I also don’t get the hate for This Hell. It’s obviously for masculine closest gays! Edited September 25, 2022 by Kh-Loud
Almodusa Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 Finally listened. Very lovely album, much softer compared to her previous one. Very 2000s feel to me, and occasional Kelly vibes.
FireFade Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 I've had Hurricanes stuck in my head for a week
GentleEarthquake Posted September 25, 2022 Posted September 25, 2022 This is a great album, I don't get the hate
KatyPrismSpirit Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Debuts at #166 on the Billboard 200 this week. Sawayama wasnt able to chart at all tho so im not complaining but? i thought she had become bigger in the US

Sky Engineer Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 She is going to shoot another video? Hope it's Frankenstein
Artur Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 Hurricanes is so so so good. I can't get it out of my head. I really wanted it to be a hit for her.
Nikko Posted September 30, 2022 Posted September 30, 2022 one week in, I feel like while it is a definite stepdown from SAWAYAMA, there aren't any songs that are horrible. It's a nice play throughout. top3 for me: imagining, your age and this hell
