Y’all do too much on 2000s ESC. Yeah the real bad entries were bad or very mediocre but I enjoy the 2003-2005 punch of Sertab, Ruslana and Helena a whole lot more than whatever Running Scared, Heroes, Arcade etc had to offer

It's totally understandable that you did, I think most people did.

Go on Youtube and check out these videos that have the entries of all 00s contests...90% is unlistenable garbage with a few gems here and there, but mostly lots of gimmicky bs to get the voter's attention. The voting sequences were the absolute worst with almost only neighbour/diaspora voting (so many people say with the juries this is even worse?? that's not true at all if you analyze how juries voted) Can't believe so many people want 'no juries' back.

Yeah, I recently re-watched the BBC’s Eurovision at 60 docu (the full video is on YouTube if you’ve not seen it, it’s a great watch) and it was fascinating to watch the show evolve… but the noticeable drop in quality in the 2000s was so jarring. Thankfully the quality has improved drastically in recent years.

This absolute bop.

Also, from the same year, one of the best vocalists Eurovision has seen.

Hope Sweden sends Agnes next year. Imagine the slayage with a song like 24 hours :alexz:

Sending Agnes just to lose (cause chances of Sweden winning twice in a row are slim) is kinda an insult to her imo :skull: But I'd love to see her as a guest performer

Malta should have won in 2005. My Number One was nothing special and Chiara has such a beautiful voice.

I don't wanna think about 2008 having juries cause there were so many jury friendly songs that were robbed. The way Portugal could've had a top 5 finish, Senhora do mar is still THAT song to this day

Now I know you didn't just say this about one of the most influential and remembered entries ever

lol not when it kickstarted and influenced this whole Diva-dom pop girl choreo entries in ESC. If it weren't for Helena's win y'all wouldn't have entries like Ani Lorak, Kalomoira, Sirusho,  Foureira, Sergey Lazarev, Dima Bilan and all of these other entries that got her creative team to replicate her win.

Also the way some of the 00s ESC dragging is xenophobia, Western Europe got more angry because Eastern Europe was actually putting effort into the contest and the Big 5 kept sending **** every single year. That's literally one of the reasons why the Juries came back, while I think 00s Eurovision is not the best decade, the amount of hate it gets is insane especially since it had so many iconic winners.

This video is very good at exploring the xenophobia things:

Even in spite of whatever trend she may have started my point still stands that the performance in my opinion isn't winner worthy. Pretty much every name you listed (apart from Dima Bilan who is the definition of political voting) outdid her. If you really wanna go there, Sertab Erener walked so that Helena could run (yes, even if she went to ESC for the first time 2 years before her). Her win brought the ethnopop trend of the 2000s to the forefront and laid the foundation for Greece's win in 2005.

And not the Chiara diss :rip: She's a Eurovision icon of the late 90s/2000s and is one of the greatest artists to never win, let's not

I've watched a few old Eurovisions recently, some quick thoughts

2003

Sertab kinda obliterated, it wasn't close for me so I'm surprised the results came down to the last country's votes.  I love t.A.T.u. but god they were awful here, I blame their managers making them sing in the key that's too high for human sustainment constantly.  Belgium coming 2nd was such an indicator of its time, it's so very Cirque du Soleil soundtrack and very Deep Forest.

I screamed at them thinking Latvia was going to win again only for them to flop.  I also screamed at Austria finishing as high as it did.  Otherwise, I appreciated most entries were individuals that looked very much like Y2K pop stars.

2007

I never realized that Dancing Lasha Tumbai and Moltiva went back to back in this contest, the whiplash :deadbanana2: Imagine if they would have had Cha Cha Cha and Tattoo gone back to back this year.

2011

How did Azerbaijan win?  Why did France flop?  This one was so confusing to me, my faves ended up being France, the UK, and Germany after the contest but even Jedward outpeaked those three.  IDK this one seemed very off to me :rip:  These older contests making me realize that Georgia used to not be a flop :rip:

2014

I can't believe there was any contest between Netherlands and Austria.  I vaguely remember the discussion here on ATRL about the duel between the two but Conchita just dominated IMO, so glad she got that win.  The Netherlands should send something country again to the contest, it'll certainly be more interesting than the crap they sent this year and the ballads they've sent recently.

Glad I got to see the full iconic performances from Ukraine and Poland here

Wait, there are people that liked that basic snoozefest from Malta? Helena’s win is the most deserved of the 2000s actually

I remember watching it that year and being so mesmerised by her only to rewatch the performance a few months ago and realise how cringey everything was, from the song, to the performance and also her weird moves.  :bibliahh:

This is an underrated moment that should've given us a lot of memes in recent years:

Don't do Kalomira like that she did her best, came in 3rd and then vanished cause her label screwed her over. They were trying so hard to recreate this -let's have a gimmicky element thing and shock the GP - and all they ended up with was opening a giant ass book. :clown:

The backing singer in this performance put in the WORK lol. She also carried most of the vocals for Eleftheria in 2012 and Natalia in 2021 so she's a Eurovision icon as far as I'm concerned :clap3:
