ATRL Moderator khalyan Posted February 8, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted February 8, 2023 Is the Czech entry going to actually go to Eurovision, what's going on with the radio silence from EBU about them?

I'm wondering if the Ukrainian delegation is objecting behind the scenes. I get the sensitivity to issues around Ukraine and the war, but I think the reaction to the song is a bit unreasonable.
Solaria Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 The quality of songs in the NFs is tragic this year.. so many songs blend into each other, no original standouts, no true *** bops just very lowkey ones.. Eurovision is OVER

This is all because one of the singers is Russian and the song is about unity, right?

And the chorus is in Ukrainian, which is causing the biggest uproar. Again I get the sensitivity and not wanting to be politically undermined in their 'winner' year, but many of the arguments I have seen about it are very nativist. It's a great song and will probably place high, so I hope they get their chance to perform it.

The Ukrainian broadcaster posted Vesna on their Eurovision instagram page (along with the other newly chosen/announced participants), so if there is something going on behind the scenes I doubt it's on the Ukrainian delegation's behalf

I think this user summed it up well Quote I feel like at least on this sub there is a ton of confusion on what the Ukranian fans are complaining about so I thought it would be helpful to provide a non biased summary on the 3 main concerns Ukranian fans have about the song 1: The fact that there’s a Russian member- I think this one is pretty self explanatory, I struggle to understand the concern because it really does appear like all band members are in support of Ukraine 2: The concern about the Slavic Sisterhood message- there is concern about the idea of Slavic sisterhood being the way Vesna tribute Ukraine when this has been one of Russia’s main justifications for the invasion of Ukraine 3: What appears to be the main concern from Ukranian fans is the whole is the (quite debatable) idea that the song is suggesting that Ukraine and Russia make peace instantly (with the phrase “choose love over power” being interpreted by some Ukrainians as meaning that they should forgive Russia for their actions if peace is reached: a good example being through this tweet https://twitter.com/trtodoit/status/1623236909542645761?s=46&t=DR2i7RtowaarIZsevjRJmw ). I don’t think Vesna actually mean this one after reading the lyrics again but I can partially understand the concern I think it’s pretty clear that Vesna and all its members are clearly in support of Ukraine. However, it is clear that the way they frame their song in support of Ukraine is clearly misguided. It also speaks volumes as to how only someone who has truly lived through such a conflict can lyrically express the feelings they are experiencing, and I feel for Vesna because they clearly wrote a great song melodically and clearly they are all talented songwriters and artists. https://www.reddit.com/r/eurovision/comments/10wxscj/ukranian_fans_comments_on_my_sisters_crown/

However, if Jamala was able to sing without issue I can’t imagine they’ll do anything with Czechia though you never know. I’ve seen people say online they should be DQ’d because the song is too political which I still don’t necessarily believe is true. It’s a shame too, Czechia has given us one of the only noteworthy songs of the year so far so it would be awful if it was unable to compete somehow.
illia Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 I hope Vesna actually get to participate with no issues because if they get disqualified for some reason of course everyone's going to blame the Ukrainian fans the lashings after Kalush winning were ENOUGH
