Mellark Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 (edited) I keep forgetting that it starts tomorrow, to be quite honest. This is my 10th year following it since I was introduced to it here during the Malmö edition and honestly, I feel like 50/50 about right now. I feel 2021 was my favorite edition of mine, 2022 did give us some bops and 2023 is pretty much the same in my humble opinion. It feels that this edition is... somewhat underwhelming. I feel it would hit on the day of my hope. But rooting for Sweden, UK, Austria, France, Czechia, Armenia, Cyprus and The Netherlands so far. Hoping The Netherlands qualifies tomorrow but I fear it's going to be a Greta Salome from Iceland 2016 situation all over again. I don't get the hype about Finland. Edited May 9, 2023 by Mellark

If some could move past their own superficiality, they'd recognise that. The biggest joke of Eurovision is that the majority of the so-called "serious" songs - Sweden is a great example of this - have the most trite and insipid lyrics, musical backing, and melodies. Croatia is good even though I initially thought it was a sonic assault on all senses. But it blatantly breaks Eurovision's rule regarding politics. It has no place in the contest regardless of the current context. But EBU is hypocritical in that regard as they are selective with applying this so-called "rule". Azerbaijan and Israel still participating. Belarus 2021 disqualified (and banned!) for even less obvious political connotations in their lyrics. Georgia 2009 too.
FanOfPop Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 I feel like today's semifinal is like a minifinale. Imo it's gonna be either Sweden or Finland. Hopefully Moldova and Czechia makes it to finale too.

Fevesy Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 https://www.esc.vote/ The voting site is up! They don't specify the limitations to the Rest of the World countries but if you have a card issued in a country that is not participating it should count towards that. Make sure you vote for Finland ofc
fab Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Not Teya & Salena freefalling in the odds.. honestly I'm salty at their team for not coming up with anything better than that basic LED background. Is it definite that they will have neither background vocals or a backing track?
Solaria Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Rest of the World vote for Sweden please. Lets make history and see a Moroccan woman win ESC twice

Georgia 2009 too. the no politics rule is so dumb to me when the reason they started this contest was… mostly political. unless you want milquetoast everything, songs will be political to some extent. 1944 was entirely political, Armenia’s “Don’t Deny” song, and last year Konstrakta’s song was entirely political, for example. I think the sooner we accept that our very existence is political, and the whole concept of this contest between countries will always be political, the fairer things will be.

blown away Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Let's place our bets to who should qualify tonight 1. Norway 2. Malta 3. Israel 4. Moldova 5. Sweden 6. Czechia 7. Finland 8. Switzerland 9. Azerbaijan 10. Portugal (for the lack of better)
Solaria Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 The no politics rule is bullcrap, Eurovision has been political from the start. If you wanna dive further into that I really recommend watching this video which explains it pretty well (also exposes the hypocrisy of the West and their attitude towards Eastern Europe):
Komet Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 'No Politics' refers to clear-cut messages like 'This country sucks' or 'Vote for this party in next elections', not to generic 'war = bad' songs like Mama ŠČ or Watergun even if they are a subtle (or not so subtle) nod to the current events. 1944 was also just referring to a historic event with no clear political messaging in the lyrics, besides the again, generic 'war = bad' meaning. And banning those songs makes no sense, the optics alone lmao

ZIVERT Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Mind you Belarus was actively attacking their own people, and was trying to send a song (in Russian) mocking the protesters. If Sweden wins this year, not only will they tie Ireland for country with the most wins, they will also tie Ireland in having the same person win twice (Johnny Logan/Loreen) Loreen deserves!
