This is a valid question and something we considered when picking the challenge. Ultimately, the challenge guidelines are only ever there to help assist you in your own creativity. We can never truly say "X artist would never record a song like this," but there are definitely little nuances and tidbits of information that can make a connection to a specific artist more obvious or natural without it seeming out of left field. Should I come across any artists I'm largely unfamiliar with I will be more than happy to do a bit of research to ensure a fair review, however I would much rather a brilliant, well-written song that might not be the obvious route for a specific artist than a song that is basically a redux of one of their past works. Part of the challenge is to showcase your influence over their style anyway, so there's a lot of room to breathe creatively in this challenge I find.
