Elizabeth Olsen annihilates Obsessed Marvel Haters

Elizabeth Olsen is tired of filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola bashing Marvel movies. The actor, who is back in theaters as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” told The Independent that she gets frustrated when people make Marvel movies “seem like a lesser type of art.”

“I’m not saying we’re making indie art films, but I just think it takes away from our crew, which bugs me,” Olsen said. “These are some of the most amazing set designers, costume designers, camera operators — I feel diminishing them with that kind of criticism takes away from all the people who do award-winning films, that also work on these projects.”

"From an actor’s point of view, whatever, I get it; I totally understand that there’s a different kind of performance that’s happening. But I do think throwing Marvel under the bus takes away from the hundreds of very talented crew people,” Olsen added. “That’s where I get a little feisty about that.”

Scorsese infamously compared Marvel movies to theme park rides while discussing how superhero movies have reshaped exhibition in a way that’s harmful to non-superhero movies. Coppola was quoted in 2019 with calling Marvel movies “despicable””.

She's right and she should say it :clap3:

I get what she's saying and the sentiment is valid but what Tarantino said about how Disney's opperates when booking theaters and stuff is as much valid. Like okay it's so nice of Disney/Marvel to hire such talented people and showcase their craft but at the same time they're literally preventing people from getting to know/appreciate other people's talent and craft by not letting other studios book screenings of their movies.

She better shift that narrative

omh are really weird and obsessed :clap3:

Love her :clap3: It's like they say, the bigger the star, the bigger the target. It's cool to hate on Marvel right now, which is why so many people are doing it.

Ok? I don't see people trashing franchises like John Wick or Jurassic Park/World, and you could say the same thing about those movies since they're just as deep as Marvel films. It only seems to be an issue when it comes to Marvel.

Still kids movies

I don't agree that it takes away from the crew'. Their work isn't what's being criticised, it's the unimaginative scripts, the poor acting and the constant regurgitation of comic-hero material Hollywood has been spitting out for decades.

The Emmy nominee did not lie :clap3:

People work hard on these movies and so many people love them, so let people who want to enjoy them, enjoy them :celestial5:

But Scorsese was right though :toofunny3:

the mcu has some trash films but as a whole it's still way way better than the fast and furious, transformers and pirates of the caribbean movies.

at least the mcu is based on story-driven, character-driven comic books that have interesting themes, concepts and universal lessons and aren't completely brainless cash grabs (for the most part).

it's okay for people to enjoy them and obviously a lot of people do, but Marvel is still the fast food of film

listen I love a superhero movie but Scorsese was right. it's not at the level of other masterpieces to even call it a part of cinema

but if these types of movies are the one making billions then I don't understand the obsession with critics... girl you got the COIN!

Marvel films are not art, they are entertainment. These films are made to be consumed by mass-audiences and make hundreds of millions in profit. Sure they sometimes do make artistic decisions and creative choices but the priority isn’t to make cinema. Most of these films are drafted up 2–5 years in advance with the fights already choreographed and plots already in place, then they add a “director” to put it together - and even then the director is still steered a certain way. All for them to reshoot up the entire thing to be more digestible after failed test screenings and have janky CGI and plot points because of it. :deadbanana2:

Scorsese spilling nothing but truth. Let’s call things what they are and move on. No need to have some feeling hurt.

I think the haters will live to see another day after this 'annihilation'

Scorcese is an old fart and it’s been ages since his last good movie (Shutter Island)

miss Olsen is right and she should say it, there’s top notch talent working for Marvel and people actually want to spend their hard earned cash watching these films :gaycat3:

How?

She openly admits that the acting is catered to the genre, but demonstrates tremendous sympathy for the countless individuals who make up the crew. They are putting in a lot of work, hundreds of hours and on tight timelines. She made several points. It's one thing not to like this franchise, but to disrespect the crew (many of which work on numerous other projects independent of Marvel) is crass and misinformed.

Perhaps instead of devaluing a woman advocating for the grips, the gaffers, the designers, the editors, the PAs, etc. we should be supporting her message.

The fact that Marvel actors are still responding to Scorcese's comments from 2019. It really stinged eh :rip:

She never mentioned him at all, the article did, not Elizabeth

Films are art, you can not like them and that’s ok because art is subjective, but they’re still art, no one’s saying they are some sort of masterpieces, but you need to keep in mind that “art” it’s just an expression of ideas or feelings meant to be appreciated, Marvel films are that you want it or not

Marvel (other than Spider-Man) is still trash that appeals to the lowest common denominator :cm:

She admits that the films are not attempting to be indie-art projects, she's not saying these films need to be considered the pinnacle of art, but that devaluing the countless hours that hundreds of overlooked crew members do for a quick headline, or to act superior (as if the critical directors haven't made their own fair share of bombs and flops) is hypocritical and preserving a perverse ideology that 'true film' can only be of a certain variety.

I love Marvel, but I don't think every single one of their films is great. That being said, I have a lot of admiration for the crews that bring these stories to fruition. When you criticize a franchise with little to no nuance it is a slap in the face to each and every person who worked on those projects. And newsflash, not every crew member working in Hollywood has the same opportunities and they shouldn't be made to feel less than just because some director thinks so.
