During this time, she was trying to rebrand before 'Anna Wintour' came out. I'm sure she was trying to clear the air so she could get Nicki on 'Anna Wintour' like she originally wanted.

The7thStranger Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Every woman who had it a little easier because of Madonna did owes her. The same way Madonna and everyone else owes Josephine Baker and Donna Summer. And that includes Azealia, who has referenced Madonna several times in her own work. 3 1
Burn Posted September 26 Posted September 26 She does have a point. When I saw that statement from Katy I disagreed as there are tonnes of influential female artists who came before Madonna. When you think about it, Madonna only came out in the early-mid 80s which wasn't even that early in modern music. To me Aretha Franklin is one of the most influential women in music and she was around more than two decades before Madonna emerged. It's true that a lot of current women in music do owe thanks to Madonna, but certainly not all. 3
JO1s Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Yeah Madonna is a huge impact, but to act like she's the only one is very ignorant 1
Blackout2006 Posted September 26 Posted September 26 (edited) I understand the 80s was long ago and 90% of this site was not old enough to remember it (I was not even born till the 2000s), but do you guys understand the weight of being the next biggest artist in the world to MJ? Madonna changed the limits of what a female artist was perceived as capable of. She made record labels realize they could be international phenomena like their male counterparts (LAV, True Blue, LAP), headline sold-out stadium tours around the world (Blonde Ambition Tour, her tours in the 2000s), enjoy long and successful careers that expand decades (90s- ROL, 00s- COATD), and be unapologetic in their art. Say what you want, but Madonna IS the blueprint of pop. No MPG in the industry has not felt her impact. Edited September 26 by Blackout2006 7 2

I can't say I've picked up on any Madge references in Azealia's. Do you have any specific examples? Not being shady, genuinely curious. 1
Kimi Posted September 26 Posted September 26 obvs women who came before madonna dont popstars after do tho. all colors. 5

Big Bad Wolf Posted September 26 Posted September 26 I agree with her. Madonna is not the end all be all for female artists. There are artists that do something entirely different.
Arthoe Posted September 26 Posted September 26 She's kinda cooking, because there has always been a huge discrepancy between what was socially allowed for white women and what was socially allowed specifically for Black women. Madonna was a trailblazer, no question, but her influence in breaking down interracial barriers for women of color is relatively small. Whitney, Chaka & Janet mainly did the early pioneer work. 5

Also the "Primadonna, mama, like a virgin" line in 1991. 1
pisuke Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Janet Jackson owes her career to Madonna and her ex-husband Renee. Control came after her debut, Like A Virgin and True Blue. Beyoncé also and said that herself. The others I agree. 1 2

Blank Space Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Ofc she disagrees. This is why no one takes her seriously. And there's at least 3 women in her post that were influenced by Madonna, indirectly or not. 2
Doogle Posted September 26 Posted September 26 meanwhile in reality Beyoncé loves and acknowledges all Madonna did 4
MonsterNavy Posted September 26 Posted September 26 katy will always get lashings one way or another huh? 2
discotitzz Posted September 26 Posted September 26 There is a point in there but, as expected, the nuance is lost because Azealia is more interested in being a contrarian than engaging in meaningful dialogue
Punky Rooster Posted September 26 Posted September 26 Even those who came before Madonna have her to thank, unless they are still doing the same old schtick they were doing in the 70s and bringing nothing new or progressive to the table (Cher, Dolly). And janet. found sex because Madonna got crucified for it beforehand but survived.
