base talk Did the Britney/XTina narrative change?

So I’m from Germany and a few years ago if you’d ask people about Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears the consensus would be that Christina’s a vocalist with a powerful, great voice and that Britney is a talentless, uncool lip-syncer. (One Person I talked to even mixed her up with Justin Bieber and thought she threw up on stage while lip syncing). So basically XTina was known as respected vocalist and Britney as a talentless manufactured puppet.  
 

However that narrative seemed to have changed the last few years with many people (I know) finding Christina’s voice annoying while Britney’s music and persona is super popular, especially among the youth. Also at clubs Toxic, Scream & Shout, BOMT etc. are staples while XTina has Genie In A Bottle at some 90s Nights. 

So I wonder why the sudden change? Is it because XTina just disappeared and Britney has better bops? Is the music industry rn in favor of a Britney-like singing voice? Discuss!
 

(Also I’m not talking sales per se, just public perception)

This is still the narrative. I mean for the narrative to have changed, something very dramatic would have had to happen with Christina’s vocals or Britney’s artistry and nothing changed.

The narrative has always been the same… Britney has always been superior, more successful, more iconic and more legendary. 
 

Christina used to have good voice but she can’t sing anymore and she’s always butchering her songs because she can’t hit the notes

Christina never did anything with that original potential, and didn't have the chops to last more than two-three eras. While she had a better voice than some of her peers, it was heavily-flawed and the screaming/poor technique got tiring for people. She also had incredibly mediocre music. 

 

So, I wouldn't say the narrative shifted necessarily, but the GP moved on from Xtina and her fifteen minutes of fame after 2006 while Britney cemented herself as a top music act with known pop classics.

I mean, not really, no hate to Christina but Britney has always been more successful and popular

the narrative has always been and will always be that Britney is a one-of-a-kind legendary superstar that shaped the modern pop industry. Xtina will have to settle with the private concerts, I guess.

The narrative about Britney was always rooted in tabloid misogyny. Once people realise that they tend to switch and accept Britney as a good artist with some amazing musical moments and incredible performances in her prime. 
 

Christina doesn’t have much of a narrative nowadays. I’m not sure many people think about her.

people realized it was no longer cool to diss Britney, it never was. Her legacy and impact seen today both in and outside of music speak for themselves 

 

over time xtinas true colors showed and she’s now known in the industry as insufferable. Ask Eminem, MJB, Mariah, Pink, just to name a few. Nowadays she’s only heard about when she’s either mentioning Britney, singing like her, or dressing like her

I mean up til the mid-00s it was a legitimate battle between Brit and Xtina. Then Xtina bought her own hype and thought she was too good for pop music, so she tried to be arty and started tanking.

 

Britney 100% leaned into manufactured camp pop music, and that’s smart because that’s literally all people wanted and expected from her. And they were happy to support her the entire time.

No, it hasn't changed. Whoever found Xtina's voice annoying, they still find it annoying. Whoever thought Britney was a talentless lip-syncer, they still think she's a talentless lip-syncer.

 

The truth is that Xtina's voice isn't for everyone (and I say this as fan), but it is undeniable that she has the respect of the industry and the GP as a whole. If you doubt this, you could watch some reactions to her live performances on YouTube and see how even people who don't usually like pop music, can't help but praise her powerful voice. And as for the industry, legends like Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Etta James, Mick Jagger, etc. have praised her voice and her performances. Even Britney said she wished she had a voice like Christina's.

 

And Britney can't change the perception that she's a lip-syncer because that's a FACT. The "untalented" part is subjective, but the fact that she lip-syncs 99% of the time isn't. She won't ever be able to change that perception as long as she keeps lip-syncing even the ballads where she doesn't have to dance or move. The fact she even lipped Everytime in the Circus Tour, and Perfume (to a weird mix with Sia's vocals front and center) in her residency is shocking. No other artist is this shameful when lip-syncing. And no other artist lip-syncs as much as she does.

If I had to bet, however, I'd say britney won't do much music in the future (pull a Rihanna) while Xtina will stick around, releasing projects over here and over there, so don't be surprised if in 15 years or 20 years xtina is the one more talked about

Xtina is still respected. She does what she wants though & doesn’t promote after a week of her releases, so she’s pretty forgotten.

 

Britney unfortunately was always in the news for her personal life, still is. She’s fresh in everyone’s mind.
