She is not a musical legend but she is a pop icon in general, a household name and her celebrity status doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

She is a legend ever since she released Let's Get Loud and Anaconda

Posted

She's more of a legend than Janet is, tbh.

JLo is more global and well-known than some of her peers (Janet, Mariah, etc...)

You don't just become a legend just because you're a celebrity, I don't understand why people don't get that. Is Kim Kardashian a legend? JLo managed to survive in the industry but has never done anything worthy of being called a legend.

And that's fine, not everyone can be a legend. You can enjoy someone without going around screaming that they're a legend. I don't think JLo herself would call herself a legend :toofunny3:

That's such a weird thread.

JLo is an undeniable icon, she is known by everyone, has done a lot in music, movies and fashion but a legend, no that's a bit too much.

All her ventures are mixed to panned. What is she a legend of? Music? Film? Fashion? No - she isn’t legendary in any of these avenues.
JLo is a master at being a celebrity and her staying power with the GeePee is impressive. She has iconic moments but that does not a legend make. If you consider JLo a legend because she’s extremely famous, then Kim K must be a legend too.

WTF is that performance, what a total mess

J.lo is a clear example of how hard work can triumph talent. Would I consider a legend... as a celebrity figure, yeah. But you know damn well she will never be a part of the discussion when it comes to music, TV or movies of her times. I don't want to discredit her achievements though, she deserves it.

She sure is

She’s an icon, but certainly not a legend. She has yet to create a body of work that speaks to her artistic vision - not that J. Lo has demonstrated that she even has an artistic vision

Posted

Nah. She’s a successful icon

Posted

She doesn't have the acclaim to be a legend. Hustlers definitely started her on the right path tho

How can some random ass ***** on twitter that's probably somebody's cashier for Family Dollar determine who's a Legend and who's not?

I was never a JLo fan, but her accomplishments should not be overlooked. She has inspired so many girls. The most impactful Latina female star of the last 25 years here in the States.

Mariah’s global career has outsold JLo’s including the US multiple times. Don’t even go there. :rip:

Mariah is the sixth best-selling female ever globally if you remove her US sales completely. She set records across Asia, Oceania. Her fanfare globally in her prime was insane.

Yes. Why wouldn't she be?

She has been considered an inspiration and influence by many actresses of color for breaking down barriers and stereotypes of Latinos and WOC in Hollywood; Kerry Washington, Eva Longoria, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Eva Mendez, Selena Gomez, Naya Rivera, Gina Rodriguez, etc.

She has been considered an inspiration and influence (and/or) admired by countless artists for her overall success in the entertainment industry (music, films, dance); Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Becky G, Karol G, Rita Ora, Demi Lovato, Bebe Rexha, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, Kat Deluna, Normani, Gwen Stefani, Princess Nokia, etc.

She has been labeled a legend and/or idol by some of her peers and newer artists; Maluma, BIA, Doja Cat, Britney Spears, Rauw Alejandro, Laura Dern, Wisin y Yandel, to name a few.

She has been labeled an amazing talent by legends like Babra Streisand, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, etc.

She is the first artist to have a #1 album and #1 movie in the same week. And to date, still the only artist to do so.

Lopez has been credited as the first female artist who helped propel the Latin Explosion movement in American music. Labeled the "Breakout Female Star" of the Latin Explosion by The Recording Academy who helped paved the way for other Latinos to crossover. Since then, she has released countless global and iconic hits in popular music despite debuting at 30 years old and music being a side gig. Labeled the Most Influential Hispanic Entertainer in the U.S., she still does amazing streams compared to her pre-2000s peers who are all full-time recording artists.

She has been credited as being the first female artist to create a successful empire (#1 album, #1 film, #1 single, top selling perfume and a best selling clothing line and within the same year). Which also paved the way for other artists to create their own successful brands.

Her performances in "Selena", "Out of Sight", "Hustlers" have recieved acclaim for her role. Not to mention, other films that were successful and have become cult classics with the GP ("Enough", "Maid In Manhattan", "Monster In Law"). "Selena" itself has been included in the National Film Registry that list films that are culturally, historically or aesthetically significant for preservation by motion picture studios, the Library of Congress or filmmakers.

Lasty, she inspired the creation of Google Images. Nobody said she created it. They said her green Versace dress inspired it. "At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen, but we had no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: J-Lo wearing that dress’, explained Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google. For that reason, he explained ‘Google Image Search was born.’

She's been in the game longer than ATRL members have been alive, 30 years and counting. There's not another artist alive who could hold a candle to her when it comes to having success in all aspects of the entertainment industry at the same time (dance, film, music, fashion, etc).

Some people (certain fanbases) may not like her due to false narratives created by the internet, and other things that happened behind the scenes. But the GP adores her as an actress and a performer, and her box office and touring numbers still showcase that. Let's not kid ourselves, in another 30 years from now people will still know who Jennifer Lopez is. It's not so much her material that makes her a legend (although she's had iconic roles and music), but her ability to break the mould and barriers, influence, inspire and still remain relevant all these years. She is both a legend and an icon in my opinion, a rarity in entertainment. And even if you still don't believe so, she will certainly die a legend since her career shows zero signs of slowing down.

everyone knows she is, only pressed haters on stan Twitter and black Twitter would say no :ahh:

Why is that?

Jlo has always been a culture vulture that steals from the black community while being unable to find success without that community. Seems like a good reason if that is one.

Absolutely none of this makes Jennifer Lopez a living legend. Shes been attached to a few successful projects and mediocre album sales for 30 years. A Mandy Moore tea. Because a few co-workers told the press they loved her? Its a no yall.

She hasnt reached the absolute heights of one-namers Janet, Madonna, Mariah, even Cher. Jlo is someone known for simply being famous especially with the white GP. Her albums havent performed well, she stars in films with other (more respected) actors.

So you mean to tell me that influencing, inspiring, opening doors and paving the way for other artists, especially those of her community, and all the records she's achieved of which many she's done first (and still many other WP have not been able to do), does not make her a legend? So then what does? Solely, acclaim? That doesn't make any sense either.

And reducing her to a Mandy Moore-tea and being only famous with WP is an insult and also extremely problematic considering all the obstacles she'd had to overcome as a WOC. You know she's much bigger than that. For Latinos, she is major and the biggest entertainer on the planet, but you're hatred is showing. As one of the tweets stated, Jennifer Lopez created a lane of her own.

This isn't true either. But since "she steals", let's talk about it.

Apologies on the Idol vs the Voice, it was a genuine question because my bias told me Xtina did it first.

regarding Google images, it’s a running joke at Google actually - the truth is, the team had already been working on the product before JLo dress was a high volume search. The dress was just an added reason for the product manager to get more engineering resources to prioritise the image search  feature. The press has been sensationalised the whole JLo dress invented Google image.

Always that same user. The obsession. :toofunny2:

Anyway, no one (sane) actually believes the everyone searching for that dress in early 2000 magically created an epiphany to introduce a search tab for images, but it played its part just like Janet indirectly played a part in YouTube existing.

Anyone can be an in influence or inspiration. Doesn't make them a legend. Experience and success over others in a specific field is what makes a legend, JLo is not.

I would say she’s a pop culture icon, but not legendary/a legend.
