swissman Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 I do like that the event has grown to be something where designers can display amazing couture fashions as modelled by modern celebrities, but I always think its done best when it's a subtle nod to the theme vs. an outright costume version of it, though even those can be done well, if the right concept is chosen. That being said, I dislike the way people critique what people are wearing by measuring it to the theme like, all I need is for you to look amazing, show great fashion, I don't need you to check boxes as it relates to what the exhibit is about, and though many people have done this over the years, it's certainly not the way its functioned for most of its history.
Archetype Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 No one actually thinks this, it’s part of the point of throwing the gala itself. It’s fun and dramatic, and some years are sillier than others. The only issue is the guest list, but how else are you to stay relevant with younger generations in an online world?
Trent W Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 (edited) Met Gala went from having Beyonce in 2016 to having James Charles in 2019. They are going to have a very hard time recovering their prestige. Edited May 2, 2022 by Trent W

Breathe On Moi Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 “Not chic” then have a Chic theme maybe? How stupid and dumb is this
Johnny Jacobs Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 I mean.. James Charles Was invited there Enough said
swissman Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 it's very weird how all of a sudden apparently the theme is not for the exhibit but what you're "supposed" to wear and any bad outfit is blamed on the fact that they "had to" dress for the theme. there's a way to do any theme fashionably, too, if you are trying to go with the theme.
Gesamtkunstwerk Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 I guess it's the same reason that celebs don't come to VMA, AMA and so on anymore, a lot of them think it's beneath them when you also throw tiktok-stars, youtubers and such into the mix.
BOOMBAYAH Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 The thing I find most funny about this critique is that most of the women who attend don’t even do too much + just dress in a conventionally chic manner, and 99% of the men just wear a regular suit The only time most people looked incredibly bizarre was during the CAMP theme and the point of that was to look…camp?

swissman Posted May 2, 2022 Posted May 2, 2022 Following the them works when most people can understand it (Catholicism), vs. when people don't get it and think they do (Camp).

The event is a public fiasco that invites criticism, hence the live-streaming, pandering to online audiences, hiring Tiktokers and YouTubers to conduct interviews, and so on. We, the general public, are practically begged to pay attention and offer our opinion. Also, the majority of fashion historians, stylists, editors, and aficionados are not invited to the event + they more than anyone have the licence to intellectually critique the outfits. Being rich/famous enough to go to an event =/= more stylish than the average person.
