Does an artist have to be respected to be a legend?

I agree.

Madonna is respected by people who aren't sexist, homophobic, religious, nationlist,  or one of the crazier Gaga stans still holding a decade-old grudge over a now nonexistent feud. She is absolutely legendary and respected by people who actually matter because she’s always stood for things like self acceptance, LGBT rights, sexual liberation and expression, peace, etc. Literally 25 years later, when 3 generations of pop girls were done and winding down (her gen -> Mariah -> Xtina/Britney) she was still smashing with a WW #1 single and the biggest female tour in history. It's actually crazy. F*** the GP and who they "respect", most of them are trash which is why Morgan Wallen's album is still top 2.

Of course.

You need the respect of your peers as an ARTIST (not simply because you're a nice person) and having contributed to the arts in a meaningful way.

That's why Xtina is indeed a legend... and others won't ever be more than icons.
