RYM is one of the largest music databases and communities online, which you can use in endless ways to discover new music.

Let's explore the many ways you can discover music using RYM.

1. Browse all-time charts

You can find out what is rated the most highly by the RYM community overall by browsing the top charts by decade or year. The thousands of ratings of the community over the past 15+ years determine where albums, EPs, singles, and more place in the charts. These rankings are updated for old and new releases based on fresh data every week.

2. Learn more about music

You can browse through the charts — or use the search bar at the top of every page on RYM to find exactly what you're looking for — to learn more about releases (like Remain in Light), including track listings, credits, and reviews and comments by members.

3. Create a chart of the best music based on your own criteria

With custom charts, you can dial in more specific detail to only include the genres or countries you're interested in.

4. Dig deep into personally curated selections of music

If you want to go a little further, browsing member lists can help, where you can find everything from themed playlists for rainy days to a year's worth of avant-garde jazz.

5. Keep track of your music collection

If you become a member of RYM, you can keep track of what you own and have listened to. You can use release and track ratings to help you remember what you thought of your favorite (or least favorite!) music, wishlist releases you want to hear later, and write reviews when you want to share your thoughts with the community.

The more you catalog and rate on RYM, the more useful it will become to you. You'll be able to search your catalog by artist, release, tag, and year. The new music page will allow you to see upcoming releases by artists in your collection that you may be interested in.

6. Give and receive recommendations

Click 'Automatic' on your user profile, or 'Recommendations' under the three bars at the top right of any page.

You can filter and adjust recommendations to your preference:

• Influence recommendations by the ratings of people you follow
• Favor newly-released music
• Exclude artists you know
• Limit recommendations to one per artist, and
• Filter to main album types (Albums, EPs, mixtapes) or show all types of releases.

You'll also get a set of "Challenge" recommendations: highly-rated music that is generally the opposite in style to what you usually listen to — expand your music taste and step out of your comfort zone.

7. Make friends on RYM

In addition to telling people you already know who love music that they should join you, there are many ways to connect with RYM members.

Perhaps you have encountered a well-written review or a list that you love. Maybe you are browsing the forums and spot a member with similar taste or someone with specialized knowledge about an artist or genre you've meant to explore.

Why not leave a comment on that member's profile page, or send them a personal message?

Clicking the + (plus) icon on a profile page will enable you to add a member as a friend. As you add friends on RYM, you can begin to utilize tools like custom friend charts and compare your collection and ratings with friends. You will also receive notifications in your profile when your friends leave comments or post new reviews and lists.

BetterRYM Browser Extension

Site just had a huge update that you can read about

here.

The two major updates:

Bolded criteria update

We have changed bolding criteria such that they are segmented by release type. This means that bold releases now include:

The top 7,500 albums,

The top 5,000 singles,

The top 750 EPs,

The top 800 compilations,

And the top 150 releases of each remaining type (150 DJ Mixes, 150 Mixtapes, etc).

These numbers are based on the proportion of releases which exist in each category.

The end result is that the number of bolded releases in every category has increased.

Launch of Sonemic recommendations feature

We have rewritten the recommendations feature from the ground up with tons of new features and a new algorithm which is a huge improvement in quality over the old feature.

- Significantly improved algorithm which can generate recommendations with as little as a few ratings.

- Vastly improved affinites tab which shows more detailed information on the years, genres and descriptors that reflect your music taste.

- The ability to filter and adjust recommendations to your preference:

• Influence recommendations by the ratings of people you follow
• Favor newly-released music
• Exclude artists you know
• Limit recommendations to one per artist, and
• Filter to main album types (Albums, EPs, mixtapes) or show all types of releases.

- A set of "Challenge" recommendations: Music which is highly rated but is generally the opposite in style to what you normally listen to (according to your ratings), to help you expand your music taste and step out of your comfort zone.

I really like the "Challenge" part!

It's a music cataloging & rating site.

You can 'rate' albums, singles, mixtapes, etc, out of 5 stars + you can catalog any physical or digital music media that you own.

The way the algorithm works now,a release has to have 200 ratings to be able to qualify for the main charts.

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of R&B or Gospel fans on the site. We need more support lol

Right, I'll start recommending the site to my mutuals on Twitter, for sure

I'm trying the Sonemic Challenge playlist on Spotify and this is really cool, they created a 10h+ Playlist with music of genres I don't usually listen to

I was wondering where this was. Iconic :jonny5: It's getting better and better after literal decades apparently

I blame this website for turning me into a music genre nerd, now I get mad when people on here can't differentiate pop, from rap, from pop rap
