I'm not surprised about the asian markets. After all it's not one of these four quadrant movies made to be liked by everyone, so without any specifical politics - social reference.

 

It's a pure comedy so you need the cultural knowing to understand the jokes, the references and the subtle level. Even most europeans don't understand a couple of jokes. Probably most japanese, especially young, doesn't know who is Stallone, what is Rocky, what is the Godfather, so basically all the ken jokes are kinda of not understandable.

 

It's surprising it's making like 40-45M final in China.

This is probably going to get pushed back I believe Super Mario went through a similar situation where Universal didn't expect it to make so much. I predict possibly the end of September for digital release.

The way this movie's success has completely destroyed the "go woke, go broke" myth is truly amazing to see. It's almost as if "wokeness" is never the reason why some movies fail and it has more to do with bad marketing and bad quality.

people mostly say that about movies led by minorities, basically saying that POC and queer people shouldn't get to lead their own movies, and thus increase the possibility of representation and progress in entertainment and society as a whole.

 

the target is usu not movies led by margot robbie and ryan gosling who already have every privilege.
