I actually found him kind of obnoxious at times It’s because of the contrast in comparison to the rest of his filmography. Literally other than The Nice Guys, Ryan’s career has been incredibly stoic and broody. Even with The Nice Guys being a cop comedy, that still gave him a realm within his comfort zone to pull from. Barbie was like a whole new playing field for him in terms of his career, and I personally believe he did great. I also have no doubt that him being obnoxious was fully intentional considering the thematic material. Agreed that Margot was definitely the commander of the screen among them though.Â
Imogene Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 I can't believe it's already at 774 milion worldwide. What a monster. I'm so happy for everyone involved.  Gosling is incredible in this movie. He was KEN. I'll be seeing Barbie for the 6th time next week, I just adore it, but I do have several problems with it.  4

Too much was too cringey/on the nose. I feel like the daughter's character wasn't realistic at all. Like WHAT was she such a ***** for? They didn't give any insight as to why her character was the way she was. She just antagonized everyone and her mom the entire movie despite the fact that she had both parents in her life, they weren't living in a shoe box, and otherwise they didn't have any otherworldly struggles.  The barbie rant calling her a fascist and making fun of her but then later in the film being like "men hate women and women hate women" like girl you ARE the woman that hates women  Her character felt like a complete contradiction just there to make parts of the plot make sense. She also believed Barbie was a psychotic adult who "believed" they were Barbie and was convinced after like 2 minutes that Barbie was the real Barbie  The daughter's storyline bothered me so much with how nonsense it was compared to other characters having thought out storylines.   2. Too many plot holes and random plots. The Ken fight made absolutely no sense. The whole song rendition and plan. They were all singing on the beach but then all the barbies went to different Kens but somehow, some of the Kens didn't have any Barbies after? Even Simu's Ken was serenading a Barbie but then started singing to Stereotypical Barbie but still got jealous when his Barbie got up and went somewhere else. But somehow he was on the "other" side of Kens despite the same thing happening to him? It didn't make sense.  Then the whole fight of opposing Kens that just break out into an eventual dance while fighting then come out holding hands with no actual conflict resolution. Like what   Then Barbie at Mattel. The way she was happy to see them and get in a box and last minute changed her mind and fled for her life with no actual explanation    I get it's a fantasy comedy but I feel like they started caring more about the feminism message than having a cohesive plot. Overall still loved it enough to see it twice already but the same issues bothered me both times  You spilled!!!!  The Barbies moving around to different Kens part was so egregious to me  The scenes really felt barely connected to me a lot of the time, just thrown together without any concern for cohesion or logic. I literally had an issue with every point you made, but there were even more. (Where are Will Ferrell and co. between the Kens fight and Barbie consoling Ry Gos? How does Margot's Barbie cry on the bench when they've made it clear they're supposed to actually be Plastic with no internal organs [e.g. no reproductive or digestive systems]? What about her brief visit to the real world would even inspire Margot's Barbie's drastic decision at the end? There was virtually no development of that very key plot point! Also, why did that older woman make the trip to Barbieland in the first place?)  I appreciate the film for many reasons, but the plot borders on incoherent at times and the feminist message is facile at best. Oddly enough (because I hate super long films), I actually think the film would benefit from an additional half hour to fill in some plot holes, develop the resolution better, and make a more complex argument re: patriarchy. 1
Roberto Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 774 million in like 10 days. This is Margot's world and we are just living on it.
GraceRandolph Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 This could become the only female directed film among the top ten highest grossing films of all time.
Gaia Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 4 hours ago, Butters said: Really explaining the Barbieland/real world portal would have mucked up the screentime/plot I feel. it felt whimsical and silly to let all the characters kinda roam freely and I honestly just let it go because I don’t think elaborating on it would have added much.  Also I was pleasantly relieved when the Mattel CEO didnt turn out to be an actual mastermind/villain and tricks Barbie into thinking he’s on her side, or anything close to that. That would be so cliche and predictable I think I’d have fit the theme of the movie for him to be obviously misogynistic but have no one around him view it as such than have him play a complete unrealistic moron.  i think it’s decent enough. But the way the movie was set up I HOPE they don’t plan to make a sequel because the obvious plot holes and useless characters will be way more obvious if they try and pump out an additional story Â

ebaby Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 already certified legend status ... this movie is a  cultural MOMENT  1
Enrique523 Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 The way Margot WON with this role. It's not just a box office smash, it's a cultural phenomenon. She's going to get so much offers after this, if she plays her cards right, she'll be in huge movies for a long time to come. This role alone will make her a legend forever. 6
Gaia Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 No but Margot having THE Harley Quinn and THE Barbie just makes her so iconic. She will be a Halloween staple for the rest of time. She is cemented into history with two iconic roles  3
TheMusicProphet Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 (edited) A LEGEND was born. Edited July 31, 2023 by TheMusicProphet
Marianah Adkins Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 And to think Margot has been consistently bombing these past few years, this really felt the amalgamation of all the good karma she stored Last year may have been brutal for her but this year pretty much cemented her as a true A-list actress. She now has a hit that she carried (I know its an IP but this wouldve bombed if it was any other actress), her Tony Stark that only she could play. Getting Oscars love if ever for her performance would just be further icing on the cake.Â
bjorn Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 If and when they’re a doing a sequel to this..  The annihilation is yet to come I fearÂ

The way some people on this site have desperately tried to manufacture a hate movement against her just for it to flop so spectacularly  She's more on top now that she's ever been. This is truly her MOMENT, this is way bigger than when she played Harley Quinn. Almost any actress would KILL to have not only a massive box office smash as the MAIN CHARACTER of the film but also for it to be so iconic and impactfulÂ

JoeAg Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 saw this for the first time earlier today! incredible film, instant classic imo  this might be a weird comparison, but it gives me the same campy, overstimulating vibes as Everything Everywhere All at Once! so tbh, definitely feel like i’ve missed certain details and I definitely want to watch it again VERY soon. but yeah, either a masterpiece or a near masterpiece, I absolutely loved it 1

This, she really really needed this boost for her career because besides being Harley Quinn and some cute performances she hadn’t had a big hit and was having flop after flop and with this she delivered a hit for the books and a $1B film!!! So happy for Greta too! 1

And after Barbie's success, i don't think people should ever count her out again. As i said, she probably will get a lot of offers for great movie roles after this, it's up to her to wisely choose her future roles so that she can impose herself as a A-List actress for years to come. And i think she can and will do it. 2
Contessa Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 I would give this a 5/10 based on my own scale (as everyone should, i don’t understand how some of you point out the glaring flaws of the film then give it a 8 and higher lmao but that’s just my own little rant).  LOVED the aesthetics and craftsmanship of the film and the influences. Also enjoyed the message behind the film but the execution missed the mark majorly for me. Margot and Ryan’s acting were great and some of the jokes were genuinely funny to me, but that’s about where the good ends and the bad begins…  A lot of you already pointed out the flaws that I would like to echo here: the writing, the side character arcs, and the message itself also felt not fleshed out enough for me.

I think she walked a fine line in choosing projects so she wouldn’t be thrown in as a stereotypical dumb blonde given her beauty. She’s always had an easygoing likability and made smart choices.  The irony that the most “vapid” and “dumb blonde” role is what’s really going to be career defining for her but she took control of it being a producer. And good for her, she took a huge risk and it’s obviously paying off. She’ll have a long career and will win an Oscar in the future. She really has it all, I just hope she doesn’t slow down after this. 2

I want to watch every movie she's been in and i can't wait to see what roles she'll take in the future. And you're right, i can definitively see her winning an Oscar, she has the talent for it.
