I'm not sure what I was expecting but I was underwhelmed. Loved the ending though

This used to be my favorite Barbie movie when I was a kid:

Just got back from watching this and I kind of expected more but still whelmed.

Margot was great and I thought she looked absolutely stunning in every shot. Honestly like breathtakingly beautiful. I loved the entire production. I was in awe of the world they created. The soundtrack worked great within the film too.

I think my main issue was some of script and dialogue didn't work well, especially with that woman's daughter. It felt a bit too "on the nose", where I thought they could have delivered the message more sophisticatedly. I really liked the message though. Again, I liked the ending but thought it was slightly drawn out.

I would have liked to have seen more Issa Rae and Simu Liu tbh.

Ryan Gosling was the best part of the entire film. I thought he was phenomenal. I actually wouldn't be mad if he won Best Supporting Actor. He was so good throughout.

My two issues with the movie and why I rate it 8.5/10 are similar.

1. Too much was too cringey/on the nose. I feel like the daughter's character wasn't realistic at all. Like WHAT was she such a ***** for? They didn't give any insight as to why her character was the way she was. She just antagonized everyone and her mom the entire movie despite the fact that she had both parents in her life, they weren't living in a shoe box, and otherwise they didn't have any otherworldly struggles.

The barbie rant calling her a fascist and making fun of her but then later in the film being like "men hate women and women hate women" like girl you ARE the woman that hates women :deadbanana2: Her character felt like a complete contradiction just there to make parts of the plot make sense. She also believed Barbie was a psychotic adult who "believed" they were Barbie and was convinced after like 2 minutes that Barbie was the real Barbie :deadbanana4:

The daughter's storyline bothered me so much with how nonsense it was compared to other characters having thought out storylines.

2. Too many plot holes and random plots. The Ken fight made absolutely no sense. The whole song rendition and plan. They were all singing on the beach but then all the barbies went to different Kens but somehow, some of the Kens didn't have any Barbies after? Even Simu's Ken was serenading a Barbie but then started singing to Stereotypical Barbie but still got jealous when his Barbie got up and went somewhere else. But somehow he was on the "other" side of Kens despite the same thing happening to him? It didn't make sense.

Then the whole fight of opposing Kens that just break out into an eventual dance while fighting then come out holding hands with no actual conflict resolution. Like what :skull:

Then Barbie at Mattel. The way she was happy to see them and get in a box and last minute changed her mind and fled for her life with no actual explanation :deadbanana4:

I get it's a fantasy comedy but I feel like they started caring more about the feminism message than having a cohesive plot. Overall still loved it enough to see it twice already but the same issues bothered me both times :lmao:

Anyone else feel Alan would’ve been the better villain than Ken’s character arc?

Isn't that what teen girls are nowadays? Serving woke just to be cool. Think they are the real **** while they're not :dies:

All of this. The mother and daughter had literally no substance or character development. Like why am I suppose to be rooting for this young girl who clearly is a mean girl bully, who suddenly is nice by the end of the movie because she now suddenly loves Barbie?

I also think the big 'finale' being all about Ken watered down the message as well. I understand they were trying to be subversive with the whole 'one Ken in the Supreme Court', but it was a long way to go for such little pay off, and I caught myself questioning whether this movie was called Barbie or Barbie and Ken last night. No shade on Ryan Gossling, he killed it, but I think it was at the expense of some of the female characters, ironically.

I dont know, I like the movie, but I just watched it again last night and there were so many different directions they could've taken it, I think where she took it made it kind of fall flat. I'm not going to criticise GG too much because she was having to work with Mattel themselves, but yeah the lack of character development or a somewhat cohesive plot definitely diminishes the replay value for me.

The best thing about this movie are the performances of the actors and the comedy, so I applaud the movie for that, and its great to see a movie by a female directer slay the box office so hard, so there's that at least :jonny:.

I'm actually surprised this is hitting $1B so fast. They truly hit the pot with this one.

It literally represents the hypocrisy of these social justice warriors or whatever their name is :skull:

Y’all completely misunderstanding the TEENAGE GIRL character :skull:

She’s obviously insanely insecure and depressed as most teenagers (and especially girls) are in this day and age. Everything teen girls do is ridiculed and they are taught to hate themselves and girly things. The ‘men hate women and women hate women’ comment was such a clear statement that as a girl she feels hated on and because it is too overwhelming to fight she’d rather join in on the hate. She gave in.

Her story arch is that throughout the movie she gets to know her mom in a different light, and gets to see her as a more holistic person (‘you’re everything you pretend not to be’). Her introduction to Barbieland also teaches her that a world in which women do have power over men exists somewhere and she warms up to the idea (she said it was ‘pretty cool’ that there’s an all female supreme court). By the end of the movie she defends and motivates her mother and Barbie and has thus learned the value of loving women and therefor herself.

"men hate women and women hate women" like girl you ARE the woman that hates women

Literally that is the point, that is how society works, she never said that she is not a part of it

She also believed Barbie was a psychotic adult who "believed" they were Barbie and was convinced after like 2 minutes that Barbie was the real Barbie

Her mother works at Mattel and tells her that she actually knows how Barbie is real and scaped from Barbieland

The way she was happy to see them and get in a box and last minute changed her mind and fled for her life with no actual explanation

You can tell she felt very uncomfortable when she was put in that box

All these things are VERY obvious, if you are not able to realize about them watching the movie, I don't whink it is their problem

Hearing the message from part of the problem makes it hard to sympathize. The little girl is unbearable majority of the movie. So her giving all these SJW speeches makes the point hard to follow.

Sorry but asslicking GG doesn’t make the movie make sense.

Just like Barbies and Kens having mostly fake items in their Barbie land turned into them having flat screen TVs, hummers, laptops, photoshop, etc. Just because… Ken brought patriarchy books into Barbieland?

Also the way of getting to barbieland was nonsense. Roller skating at Venice beach? Loads of people do that. It would make sense if you needed a Barbie or something but then the Mattel guys did that without any. Like huh?

And the CEO of Mattel was a huge wasted opportunity to show how purposely deceiving men in powerful positions can be. He should have been like the guy Ken first talked to who said society just hides Patriarchy better. Making him an imbecile is counter productive.

but also the storyline of how humans impacted Barbies with how they played with them, but then Ken’s casa mojo dojos suddenly appeared in the real world instantaneously and we’re “huge sellers”

Again, I understand fantasy comedy but I’m pretty sure this movie will miss virtually everything at the Oscars. The plot just isn’t actually strong enough and has too many plot holes.

It’s especially noticeable when you watch Oppenheimer with it. The difference in how the plots develop and are given chronologically are night and day.

You can really tell which director is more seasoned and knowledgable on putting together a cohesive plot and presenting a flawless storyline.

Anyways, I still enjoyed the movie. But denying the obvious plot points doesn’t make it any better

i’m so glad i’m not the only one underwhelmed :noparty:

i was really excited to watch the movie and really wanted to like it but it lacked something for me

people on Twitter praising this movie to high heavens and saying it’s the best movie they’ve ever seen ruined the movie for me, it just built up my expectations too high

7/10 for me, definitely not the best movie i’ve ever seen

Watched it last night and Ryan was phenomenal. I, of course, always root for females but Barbie had been upstaged by Ken in her own movie.

7/10 for it

The Barbie Land worldbuilding was so poorly done and explained. Are the Barbies in Barbie Land even sentient? Are they plugged into the Matrix? What happens to Margot’s doll self once she becomes human? It was a mess and it becomes worse the more you think about it. Honestly the movie should’ve cut like half the Barbies and Kens because it got in the way of Barbie’s main arc of wanting to become human.

Really explaining the Barbieland/real world portal would have mucked up the screentime/plot I feel. it felt whimsical and silly to let all the characters kinda roam freely and I honestly just let it go because I don’t think elaborating on it would have added much.

Also I was pleasantly relieved when the Mattel CEO didnt turn out to be an actual mastermind/villain and tricks Barbie into thinking he’s on her side, or anything close to that. That would be so cliche and predictable

Interesting how most of the people complaining are men. Ditto.mp3 with identifying with Ken more than Barbie like duh?

Barbie is a fantasy, the fact that dolls have a spirit world and can travel to the human world is nonsensical in itself. Do people also complain about the nonsensical plots of Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland? :rip:

Oppenheimer is a literal biopic about an actual person's life story so of course it's a more logical story? :rip:

This was like an 8/10 to me
Great movie. What I find funny is how the campaign for this helped Oppenhaimer so much. Oppie is real bad, full of cliche dialogues and scenes and awful choppy editing. Can help but to think that people are praising that just to outshine this (people outside of nolan fans which are as crazy as the snyder fans)

I don't really understand why Ryan is being praised to high heaven, he was okay but his performance and the way they wrote his character was completely overshadowed by Margot. I actually found him kind of obnoxious at times
