I just think I’m liking this less the more I think about it. The movie feels a bit outdated to me. Like… it’s so similar to movies and shows I love in its messaging (Buffy, Legally Blonde, Charmed) but these are all at least 20 years old at this point, and in the case of Buffy and Legally Blonde they managed to deliver similar feminist messages with greater nuance. Maybe this is just the furthest a feminist message can get within the confines of Hollywood?

I think oddly enough for a feminist movie, Goslyn steals the show... but Margot was ok. America was bad :biblio:

For real, it’s bizarre how Ken arguably had more of a character arc and focus compared to Barbie, even getting multiple music numbers. Honestly I think Greta was more interested in the Ken perspective, because Gloria and Barbie got shortchanged narratively.

They just being playful and acting like their characters in the movie

Ryan also puts his hand behind his back and says "do you want me to?"

Just watched this at the cinema, I loved it so much!!!!

Margot Robbie the WOMAN that you are. I am literally obsessed. She was brilliant on all fronts, the acting, the looks, the body the stance... I don't remember last time I was this gagged over somebody that is not Beyoncé herself. She's got a new fan.

My co-workers are talking about it non-stop and some still have to go and they really want to. Margot will have legs, I fear.

America did great but I don't think it's happening. It will be already hard for Margot and Ryan for such a movie, but fingers crossed.

Just came home from seeing Barbie for the first time. I was bopping my ass off to Charli XCX song during her scenes :WAP:

I’d honestly be shocked if this film received any acting nods since award shows are not favorable to box office smash films. But hopefully it can be an Angela Bassett WF situation where Hollywood feels they have to nominate someone.

the movie is predicted to gross 1,2b.

Well, unfortunately I was pretty disappointed :gaycat7:

I think there were some definite highlights (America, some of the supporting characters, the Billie scene, the last line), but I thought that more than half of the jokes just didn't work. A lot of the writing was awkward imo, and I think the audience agreed cause no one in the theater was laughing either. A bigger issue for me was pacing, as a ton of the transitions just felt super clunky. (Ex: The two characters walking at the end; how are they suddenly surrounded by white?!)

I also thought the messaging was pretty muddled. I thought it would be a huge challenge to wrangle a coherent feminist message in a Barbie film, but I had hope Greta could do it. But ultimately, I don't think it offered an interesting and coherent stance on anything really, as it presents America's (very basic) speech as some kind of revelation. But then it shifts to Ken's identity crisis :psyduck: It just was not doing what I hoped it would.

It was def fun to look at, though! :beach:

Okay, just saw the movie today and i LOVED it! I thought it would be a lil more silly but actually it has pretty funny jokes and seems like it was made for people that grown with Barbie and not for children... the movie is not for kids at all :bibliahh:

I liked America's speech but honestly i think it was kinda... redundant? Like, we can understand the message of the movie and then she comes and literally details what is the message of it. But yeah i think there's a lot of dumb men people out there so they had to make it clear clear. :giraffe:

There's some clever jokes even on the small details and i was laughing my ass off :rip:

The soundtrack is nice but the only songs that were properly used in the context of the movie were Pink (this one was SO funny), DTN, Speed Drive, I'm Just Ken, WWIMF and Barbie World (for the credits). The rest is just a TTH playlist for marketing purposes. Barbie def needed her own musical moment but i guess Margot just can't sing and that's fine though.

Really want to see this again soon!

If Laura Dern can win an Oscar for her 1 speech in Marriage Story, I don’t see why America shouldn’t be able to at least snag a nom.

Also, contrary to a lot of comments in here, I thought the movie was actually quite interesting messaging wise. Usually feminist films are pretty dismissive of the men’s side and how they contribute to feminism as well. But one of the central points of the movie is how Barbies are dismissive of Kens and taken for granted, so Kens turn to things like patriarchy to take power, rather than finding themselves and creating their own narrative instead of being cast aside for not being “a man” (Barbieland) or fitting into the predetermined idea of a “man” (Kenland).

It kept the female perspective of feminism pretty simple (yet effective imo) because the more depth on the Ken side of things woild have made the movie far too muddled and complicated while trying to attack too many topics. Idk, I thought that perfect balance of the two made the movie fun and enjoyable for everyone, basically a living example that Barbie is for everyone and everyone can enjoy Barbie, the movie, the toy and the message.
