I never wanted a movie to NOT end so bad in my entire life

and the final see had me CRACKING UP :deadbanana2: and I especially loved how unhinged and psychotic the movie felt at times

as much as I enjoyed Ryan Gosling's performance as Ken, I think he was heavily aided by good writing and direction. the role was not particularly challenging as far as acting goes. Simu Liu actually ate him up during the dance sequence.

Margot had a lot harder role to play and did amazing, which is a lot more impressive to me. Barbie actually had to display emotional range.

I agree but I wouldn't say the role of Ken isn't challenging. Comedic acting can be just as difficult to nail as dramatic performances and, imo, he gave a really nuanced performance.

Great comedic acting is always undervalued. Margot did great with the emotional moments, but I don't think Ryan's commitment and tone should be undersold. He found a perfect himbo groove and brought an arc to that.

Ryan and Margot were both great. But in terms of performance I think Margot was given more moments to be nuanced and vulnerable. I felt what she was feeling in the little moments like with the old woman on the bench and the scene near the end with Ruth.

Rhea Perlman made me cry. I was not prepared for that!

also the gay going "love that" :lmao: I felt so heard and seen

Just got home from seeing it and I unfortunately didn't love it as much as everyone else is loving it. It was fun, visually stunning and had some great emotional moments, but it was a bit too camp for my taste. Margot, Ryan and America KILLED it. The montage with What Was I Made For? almost made me tear up.

I'd give it 7.5/10

Dua's wig had me cackling for real :rip:

As much as I loved this film, I really hope there aren't any sequels or spin-offs. This movie was perfect as just a one off. If anything studios should be smart enough to realize lightning probably won't strike twice and just try to create other stories with great marketing that can put butts in seats.

Ironically, looks like the 2 biggest opening weekends to not be part of an ongoing or already planned movie series are:

Barbie, and...

Oppenheimer.

I agree with you, but judging by how many people (including in this thread) are saying Ryan Gosling outshined the rest of the cast I wouldn't say his performance is undervalued.

I just think it's a shame that he's talked about as the Oscars contender and not Margot when she had to do all the heavy scenes while Ryan got to just goof around.

I think the scene with the old woman on the bench might actually be my favourite scene in the movie. It really sets the tone for the rest of the film, gives us characterization of Barbie, and kind of foreshadows what the whole movie is all about. It's such a simple yet powerful scene, it made me emotional watching it. Great acting from Margot, she really sold that scene for me.

Somebody told me that apparently they wanted to cut that scene from the film but Greta Gerwig fought for it to be kept in, and I'm glad she did.

Exactly what i was thinking. Ryan is HARDLY being undervalued here, if anything Margot is.

Because he has more standout moments. And that will translate better to a supporting actor campaign than Margot’s will to a lead race. But I wouldn’t expect the Academy to go for either.

Who were the people during the montage of ‘What was I made for?’ ? I didn’t get that part

It was the cast and crew's childhood videos. It wasn't supposed to be anyone specific though, it was there to show that Barbie understands what real human life is about.

Saw it Thursday and Saturday night! LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!

I don't need it at all, but I'm debating getting the Barbie car popcorn holder (without the Barbie). The chokehold the marketing from this movie has on gays and girls! :jonny:

My only gripe was Simu, but...

Spoiler

since his character of Ken was meant to be "not cool" to Barbie, it almost kind of made his casting a bit meta and perfect for the character.

Oppenheimer is the third biggest, second would be The Passion of Christ.

That wasn’t ongoing nor planned. They could easily make Barbie 2 and it wouldn’t take anything from its success.

um...a sequel is planned so it is a sequel that is planned.

but anyway. it'd probably be awhile for barbie 2 since gerwig has a few narnias lined up.

But it wasn’t planned in the time of release. The sequel comes 20 years later. That amount of money in 2004 is outstanding. Either way, really happy for both Barbie and Oppenheimer; these are great news for cinema.
