first movie i went into theaters for after the pandemic.....absolutely amazing i was laughing the whole time

i could write a paragraph about it's portrayal of feminism but it's really not as radical and over-the-top as reviewers are claiming it to be, much of it is straight from a white feminism infographicย IG post made in 2015......but anything remotely up-lifting women in this political climate gets at least 3/5 stars from me. & it's a fun movie at it's core that really shouldn't be taken seriously, if anything it adds onto it's campiness in a way

usage of wwmif throughout & at the end was definitely one of the best parts, wasn't the biggest fan of dance the night but the one scene made me like it alot more

we all clapped, cried, laughed, danced....just amazing and so very well deserving of the hype. so many people showed up in pink as well :jonny5:

(unfortunately i didn't show out as much which is something i'm starting to regret)

i really hope other studios like this take notes from the way it was marketed, i'd love to experience the feeling i felt with this again. i was somewhat getting tired of it's omnipresence but that is for sure gone now, rooting for this so hard

Can't wait to watch it.

Also while it's obviously a feminist film, I'm seeing some people call it "white feminism". Is that true or is it just some men using that to be misogynistic in regards to the feminism within the film?

ย

Also how are international audiences reacting to the politics and feminism aspects of the film?ย

Yeah itโ€™s pretty much a feminist perspective of a white privileged woman, with the target group being white women that hit the glass ceiling in their middle management jobs.ย

I thought some time about this film and why I think itโ€™s just mid. And I think the moment I realized that was whenย

Barbie flies down her house into her car, which even for me as someone who never played with Barbies was obviously to mirror how girls play with theirs. It was a smart and intuitive scene. But then the narrator explains it for half a minute, like they expected the audience to be mentally challenged, taking all the smartness out of that scene :deadbanana2:ย  the rest of the film unfolds in similar manner.ย

I totally feel this! ย Like the scene where barbie cries about being unattractive and is (in this scene) without makeup, etc and the narration chimes in to remind us that Margot is too beautiful to convince us sheโ€™s crying in character for not being attractive. Like I didnโ€™t need that reminder, the punch line was obvious almost immediately. This was a reoccurring theme through the movie for me(in terms of over explaining a message).ย
ย

I did enjoy the film all in all though. Lots of good unexpected comedy that had me belly laughing from time to time.

Yeah, kind of. As a white dude, that isn't really something that I even thought about, but I can definitely see that now. I did notice it was very heteronormative too. I think they were trying to push a message without alienating too many people.

It's heteronormative because Barbies themselves are hetero af. Allan is clearly queer coded along with some Kens. But hard to find a lesbian Barbie other than the obvious Weird Barbie.

When Margot is crying and the narrator makes that joke about her being cast I rolled my eyes so hard. Jokes can never just be subtleย

Yes! Everything was just SO. ON. THE. NOSE. Iโ€™m actually wondering what the Diablo Cody treatment wouldโ€™ve been like.

the fourth wall break was the joke though, and was funny in and of itself. no one was laughing before. I feel y'all just clearly don't like the movie's deadpan sense of humour. the directness is the point.ย there was something quite British about the film's humour IMO

--

I also think people are not understanding the films political narrative, and are just getting put off by words like feminism and patriarchy. It is an adjustment to have such politically charged language thrown around in this type of movie, but try to look past it. There was so much in there about masculinity, motherhood, expressing emotion; asking questions like what equality actually look like? what should our relationship to idealised images be? It was so dense.ย

ย

I usually have a great distaste for simplistic corporate white feminism but I don't think this was that at all. In no way was it a men bad grr women have it hard grrr movie. If anything I feel that if that's what someone takes away, they simply were not paying attention or missed the nuancesย :michael:

I would call that less deadpan and more Marvel-adjacent humor. Like "isn't it so meta that we pointed this out??" :toofunny2:ย  Most of the jokes in the movie were good but almost all of the narrator bits were really on the nose and basic imo.

What a great movie. Damn. I don't think I've ever seen a movie that was such an event as this one.ย

Why are you asking me? Idc and haven't noticed that. Hated this movie and rather let the memory of seeing it fade.

Just watched it yesterday during a matinee, the theater was packed. I really enjoyed it. The marketing seems to be a campy and fun film, but once you actually see it, the soundtrack makes sense and it's more complex than that. I had never seen a Greta Gerwig film, but she really did a great job with this film. Want to see it again on Dolby Cinema, but I watched it on AMC Prime, does it even make a difference?

Ugh loved it too! I haven't laughed so much at the cinema in awhile. And that scene where Margot is sitting on a bench and feeling emotions as she watches people living their lifes is just amazing... Dua's song stuck in my head now (didn't really click with me at first when was released). About to watch it for the second timeย :heart2:
