I need the trailer! We already have ones for Flash, Transformers, Indiana Jones which are all being released in June so I guess next month we could get the first trailer.

It is kind of interesting that they haven’t released one yet, especially given that Oppenheimer (which is opening against this) already has one out (one with a lot of views I might add). Perched for a proper first look though, have high hopes for this!Β

I still have a feeling this movie is going to bomb with general audiences even if it is well received critically. Kids are going to be turned off because so far this feels way too adult leaning satire to appeal (like what children are losing their **** over stunt casting Olivia Colman and Helen Mirren playing themselves? Who is this for?!), whilst adults seeing the marketing so far will think it automatically too camp and aimed at young audiences β€” because it’s Barbie.

Β

Margot Robbie not known for being a comedienne also makes it harder to pin point what genre they are going for β€” adult comedy? Family friendly movie based on the toy? It’s giving The Stepford Wives (2004).

Β

Regardless of what people think of Amy Schumer you know exactly what her Barbie would have been and would have been far easier to sell as an adult comedy. Probably wouldn’t have made a lot of money either but wouldn’t be a $100m sinkhole. Like this being positioned as a summer blockbuster is so bemusing but I’m here for it.

As if kids know enough about them to care either way. Little girls will see barbie and bright colours and rush to the theatres with no concern for who the actors are.

The Lego movie saw huge success doing both. Just last summer Minions made close to a billion dollars straddling the same lines. It's not really that bizarre a prospect.

Do you seriously think Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling cosplaying as Barbie and Ken are going to have the same pull with families as the minions?Β :rip:Β

Β

You’re comparing this live action satire featuring zero known comedian draws to two cleanly marketed animated movies aimed squarely at families? And now I’m seeing from the test screenings that this is supposed to be a studio comedy with a PG13 rating? When was the last time a studio comedy was a four quadrant success? Let alone one that is as scattershot in tone or audience appeal as this one?
Β

Like I am very much excited to see this, but whoever thought this should be a $100m tentpole I would like to have whatever they’re smoking because unless this trailer provides a clearer hook for audiences than β€œhere’s Margot Robbie winking at the camera” this is about to be be the bomb of the summer.Β

i mean, not comedian but she's known for harley which has many comedic chops (tho birds of prey was a flop). but yeah the marketing for this is all over the place, not really sure who's the target audience, young / older gays and women? either way, i'm excited for what greta came up with.

Posted

Personally I am super excited to see this :duca:Β However, unless women and gays come through then yeah this is probably going to bomb considering it's expensive.

Posted

The gays will definitely support this more than they did Bros tbhΒ :clap3:

This is not a family movie though. People who attended the test screening said there are sexual jokes and innuendos. Trailer really had Kubrick references for god's sake. Who thinks this is for children?

Posted

I would say that the demographic target is the same as it would be for a romcom, women about 25, to 34/40 yo, who grew up with barbie from the 80s and 90s and want to see her on the big screen. It's not gonna do numbers at all.

And you really think this is going to have wide enough appeal among adults alone to make profit on a $100m budget? Do you think Warner Bros really aren’t expecting this to have four quadrant appeal? What from the marketing so far suggests it’s not for a family audienceΒ a la Enchanted aside from have A Space Odyssey references that everything from The Simpsons to Rugrats has parodied at some point. Because God knows it wasn’t until I read the test screen reactions that I had any idea it was going to have any kind of raunch or be PG13.

Β

Can you even name the last hit studio comedy?

All Barbie films so far been animated and aimed at children, do you really think women 25+ are clamouring to see a live action Barbie on the big screen?

Β

Like listen it sounds like I’m hating but I’m just honestly bemused that Warner Bros has spent $$$ and giving summer tentpole status to Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s swing but more power to them. I’ll be there opening weekend flop or not but then I’m someone who is excited to see Gerwig’s next film, I’m not the Gee PeeΒ :rip:

The ones that played with dolls as kids, yeah. And maybe bring their kids with them, but I don't see the public democratic being kids. That's why they do animation barbie movies for, to sell their dolls.

Β

As I said, it's not gonna be a success, maybe a cult camp classic in 10 years.Β

Barbie is literally 60 years old, there are multiple adult generations who grow up with this brand. This should be considered as a franchise, rather than stand alone comedy film. Greta has a great track record, the film has a starry ensemble cast, it is light and breezy so perfect for the summer, there will be probably a bunch of make-up, clothing etc. collabs. I am not saying this will gross 1B$Β  but why wouldn't turn a good profit?

Do you seriously think I was suggesting that or are you just making a facetious argument for the sake of it? Simmer down.

I wasn’t the one who made the comparison in the first place but sure!

Β

The best recent comparison I can think of is The Lost City; made $190.8 on a $68m budget and was the 20th highest grossing Hollywood film WW of last year.

Β

However that movie also being just as much action/adventure helped, was far more transparent in its marketing and Sandra Bullock decades in the game is still a bigger Box Office draw than Margot Robbie. Same with Channing Tatum compared to Ryan Gosling.

Β

I don’t know, even if it did those numbers, I don’t think with a higher production budget, a prime Summer release (and a teaser trailer attached to Avatar) that result will be considered much of a win or with the additional marketing costs this will be enough to turn a profit.

Β

I think it will do less than Ticket to Paradise. The whole trying to keep the plot under wraps things is not helping, this new trailer really needs to sell whatever the story is.

Posted

How many times it needs to be said this is not going to be a kiddie movie? It's an adult comedy/satire.

Posted

I think the target demo are teenagers, the TikTok crowd, Mean Girls stans, etc.

Moviegoers aren't just children and boomers :rip:

Β

That being said, it's really hard to predict how this will do but that's cause we only have one teaser

We need a couple more trailers and some clips

Tell the marketing team that and quickly.
