Jessie Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 I wonder if we will soon be locking in Barbie toppling Harry Potter 8 and its 12 year record as Warner Bros highest grossing opening weekend of all time ($169,189,427 unadjusted).Β Β With the amount itβs gobbling up screens and showtimes heading into the weekend it really is set to explode.
Cherish Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Just a reminder if you go see lt this weekend and can't get a good seat, you only have yourself to blame. Not the minimum wage paid movie theater worker. I'm going to see it tonight but I work all weekend and I'm so nervous Β

Aethereal Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Only 100K more than the TLM in South Korea in it's first day.Β Seems to be underperforming like Mario in both China and Korea. Probably will end with $10-15M total in both countries each. The film climate in China and Korea seems so weird. Japan is probably going to eat this though as they responded significantly better to both TLM and Mario in comparison. I can see the same happening with Barbie.Β Β Β

Gossip_Boy Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 With the exception of Avatar and a select few more franchises, China is a nearly dead market for Hollywood movies these days anyway. For Barbie, other markets like Latam will make up for the lack of support in China/SK. Β Iβm interested in seeing how this does in Japan tho.Β Β Β
CroNich Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 (edited) I really liked it. I wasnβt expecting it to laugh quite as much as I did. Some things: Β I do kind of feel like the plot takes a back seat in favor of the comedy/absurdity of it all. Β A bit too much ken, especially towards the end. I think Frozen 3, Zootopia 2 and Toy Story 5 will all declineΒ Β Not just in Japan/East Asia but worldwide, again thanks to the "I'll just wait for it on Disney+" conditioning/habit that's still not changed plus the franchise fatigue that's affecting everyone lately. Β Hmm so Barbie will be a wildcard in Japan as it's only the second (?) most popular doll brand I think after Licca-chan. Kinda like what Bratz would be in the US. Barbie is also less popular than Mimi in Korea, which explains the numbers there but it's still quite early to tell tbh. Β Barbie is such a Western/US idea and icon though, that's why Japan and Korea had to come up with their own "Barbie" to fit their culture, more childlike and cute, different proportions, usually not blonde, etc. It's kind of like how Audrey Hepburn was way more popular in Asia than Marilyn Monroe, especially with Japanese women who could relate more to Audrey's innocent persona and body type. But still, it's always a wildcard when it comes to Japan's taste in movies so who knows.

Kylizzle Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 Just watched. Margot Robbie is such a talent! Ryan Gosling is funny but a little overpraised imo. This is Margot's movie through and through. Some of the dialogue is REALLY heavy-handed though. They lowkey thought they were being deeper than they were in one scene. This is still a corporate comedy at the end of the day.
