Gossip_Boy Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 With the exception of Avatar and a select few more franchises, China is a nearly dead market for Hollywood movies these days anyway. For Barbie, other markets like Latam will make up for the lack of support in China/SK.  I’m interested in seeing how this does in Japan tho.  Â
CroNich Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 (edited) I really liked it. I wasn’t expecting it to laugh quite as much as I did. Some things:  I do kind of feel like the plot takes a back seat in favor of the comedy/absurdity of it all.  A bit too much ken, especially towards the end.  I think more of the movie should’ve been set in the ‘real’ world. That’s where the comedy shines the most.  other than that it was great Edited July 19, 2023 by CroNich

TLM was Disney's most popular movie in Japan before Frozen which is helping the modern movie to push 20M-25M dollars gross.  Bigger than the Renaissance Aladdin and BATB. TLM did not do as good in Japan as in UK but still it did carry on a bit unlike in China and Korea.  Disney, now, wants to milk the Avengers again and they better be careful with the budget as China has given up on Western movies and established their own Box Office ecosystem. They should expect a radical drop in numbers from China considering all the possibilities, which was a massive market in 2019 for the movie. I think Mario was helped by the fact that it wouldn't be on Disney+ months later  unlike all the other Disney movies post-pandemic. I think Frozen 3, Zootopia 2 and Toy Story 5 will all decline  Not just in Japan/East Asia but worldwide, again thanks to the "I'll just wait for it on Disney+" conditioning/habit that's still not changed plus the franchise fatigue that's affecting everyone lately.  Hmm so Barbie will be a wildcard in Japan as it's only the second (?) most popular doll brand I think after Licca-chan. Kinda like what Bratz would be in the US. Barbie is also less popular than Mimi in Korea, which explains the numbers there but it's still quite early to tell tbh.  Barbie is such a Western/US idea and icon though, that's why Japan and Korea had to come up with their own "Barbie" to fit their culture, more childlike and cute, different proportions, usually not blonde, etc. It's kind of like how Audrey Hepburn was way more popular in Asia than Marilyn Monroe, especially with Japanese women who could relate more to Audrey's innocent persona and body type. But still, it's always a wildcard when it comes to Japan's taste in movies so who knows.

Just a hunch. Aside from streaming which is definitely a factor there is definitely franchise fatigue. I doubt Frozen 3 will pass 1B. Unrelated but I think that the explosions of remakes and squeals will also affect more than half a century old franchises like James Bond.  Regardless of how the James Bond movie will turn out to be I expect it to underperform because the film market in the past years has a created a bad atmosphere for old IP.  Edited July 20, 2023 by Aristotle
Rocket Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 Just got back from seeing this. Â The Barbie Land opening sequence is an absolute slay. Â
Bhabylon Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 Just watched it, really enjoyed it  A little heavy handed at times, but it was a really funny, really smart film 1
ALA Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 Just got out of the movie. Margot and Gosling fantastic  I will say the ads showed so much of Ken's scenes  but still he killed it  Overall I thought it was really enjoyable and well done. Idk how to feel about the ending lolÂ
Kylizzle Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 Just watched. Margot Robbie is such a talent! Ryan Gosling is funny but a little overpraised imo. This is Margot's movie through and through. Some of the dialogue is REALLY heavy-handed though. They lowkey thought they were being deeper than they were in one scene. This is still a corporate comedy at the end of the day.
fridayteenage Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 $300 mil movies in the US whose title is the female lead: finding dory $486 captain marvel $427 wonder woman $413 alice $334 1

ALA Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 I think  Barbie wanting to become human kinda felt random on initial thought but I guess it makes sense in that she felt emotions after entering the real world that simply being in Barbieland wouldn't be enough. Definitely wasn't the ending I was expecting lol but I think having Barbie and Ken not be lovers made sense for this movie
Flanders Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 This was so enjoyable   Watched it at the pre-premiere last night in a packed theatre. I legit BURST out laughing during the depressed barbie joke, and that final punchline right before the credits was so good. Loved it! If anything I think the director could have gone a little further problematizing the impact of Barbies.  But whatever. SO good  5 hours ago, Kylizzle said: Just watched. Margot definitely had the best performance of the bunch but that's also because her character is the protagonist. This movie is already a modern classic tbh
Elliot Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 saw it today and it delivered everything i wanted  abit too much Ken tho i was hoping for more if Barbie figuring out who she is which is what i thought the Billie song was suggesting but the sets were perfect and Margot did an amazing job. I WILL SAY after watching i do believe Ryan was the best for the character even if he doesn’t look as young as people think Len should look
Desire Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 Went to the Barbie Blowout Party last night. Wish it was more of a party with at least balloons  but it was cute that they played a few of the songs and videos before the movie. Also the button pin and mini poster is cute. The movie though... so good and worth all the hype. Margot and Ryan are the perfect Barbie and Ken (and he was no overused or overpraised) his portions are what made the plot move further along imo.Â
Dialamba Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 Barbie was a collapse. The way the audience was clapping and laughing the entire time. Margot and Ryan will always be famousÂ
Memoirs387 Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 Saw it at the Barbie Blowout party. Absolutely loved it. Seeing it again on SaturdayÂ
Bhabylon Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 Spoiler The Michael Cera role needed to be played by a gay man tbh  1
Arcadius Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 Had a standard showing for tonight but then my local theater added a ton of more showings this morning for the weekend so I’m seeing it in the morning instead but on a RPX screen. I’m so excited!Â
navykesha Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 My country banned this movie  what a shame that i could not support my queen  gonna wait 2 month to see this movie in Hd  im pissedÂ
ALA Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 To go out of your way to review bomb movies made for women is pathetic  waste of time  I will laugh if this ends up being WB's biggest opening ever
