Hurem Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 omfg I just checked my local theater and there are like 9 screenings a day only couple of seats left for tomorrow's screenings 1
Alex Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 I'm back from the movieeee. The whole experience was really fun, I love how the cinema really treated this "Barbie Night" screening as an event! They had a photobooth, champagne glasses w/ orange juice or rosé, a barbie box photoshoot setup, glitter tattoo station and some sort of makeshift flea market in the middle of the hall with drinks and jewelry, all dressed up in Pink. When I got to the room there was a Barbie goodie bag waiting on your seat which had a cute shirt and some snacks in it! The effort they put into this phewww just made the experience 10 times better Now onto the movie: No major spoilers but just general thoughts & feelings Spoiler The movie itself was fun! Like that's the best word I can use to describe it. The plot and storyline were both humorous and heartwarming, the latter of which they absolutely nailed at the end. (Thank you Billie) I will say from a music standpoint, from what I can remember there were only really 6 songs that got an actual "moment" in the movie, while the rest were just used for background music for 10-30 seconds. pink by lizzo - morning routine scene dance the night by dua - dance party scene angel by pinkpantheress - school scene speed drive by charli - barbie chase scene what was i made for? by billie - existential crisis scenes (this one was brought back a few times throughout the film) and of course "I'm Just Ken" which was it's own thing I was lowkey expecting more of the music to be intertwined throughout the film after the Dance the Night preview? I guess they worked with what they had, but I'm not exaggerating when some of the songs either weren't in the film at all or had like 10 seconds on screen in the background looolll Maybe it's not too much of an issue but just something I picked up on! Anyway back to the movie, I wasn't expecting the feminist tones to be the whole thing but they handled it very well and didn't address it in an unflattering or eye-rolling way. In fact, I have to applaud how much they made actual problems humorous or easy to digest throughout the film, almost like everyone is in on the joke. Margot and Ryan were great casting options and the real world moments were genuinely a laugh. The timing almost felt a little rushed in the third quarter but I guess they had to wrap it up eventually (or maybe I just didn't want it to end) but I would definitely recommend the movie to anyone who wants to watch. It's Barbie! 1
Alex Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 ok this one is a major spoiler?! be warned Spoiler did anyone know the inventor of barbie was going to make an appearance in the film? I was kinda shook when she just randomly appeared on screen and it took me a minute to put together that it was actually her! Thought that was super cool. When she told Barbie she could be whatever she wanted to be and that she's able to experience the normal human life was super endearing. Now that was an emotionally charged moment!

It's Barbie! is there any twist or just the one we totally got from the “i’m just ken” video?

Spoiler Essentially the "twist" is that Ken goes back to barbieland from the real world and brings the real world patriarchy ideology back with him and the Kens take over Barbieland & turn it into Ken-land. He justifies this by always previously feeling like his purpose was to be noticed & accepted by Barbie, and now that he learned men can be in charge he kinda pulls an uno reverse on Barbie which in turn sends her spiralling. Of course, they both mend everything together in the end and Ken becomes his own person by the end of the film. spoiler alerT

mystery Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Seems pretty positive so far to me, some commentary how it misses the politics from Hollywood Reporter and Time though.
