Jessie Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 I still have faith that Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have written a pretty tight screenplay with a strong visual style direction from Gerwig that plays well in full….. but for a studio comedy this is going to rely on the camp / the story doing the charming because their brand of light comedy being played for big broad laughs with sardonic actors like Gosling and charisma voids like McKinnon ain’t doing it. And who else was highlighted in the trailer? Hari Nef flatlining and Will Farrell not doing anything funny? Not a single laugh outside “does anyone else think about dying?” On the gay cannon scale I still see this teetering between the tonal mismatch mess of The Stepford Wives remake and the charming empowering pleasantness of Legally Blonde rather than something more biting and incisive like Tina Fey’s Mean Girls script which I think is what people were hoping for from The Truman Show comparisons.

That's great and all, and I love Gerwig for bringing it on the 60s visual front that stands out from everything else playing this summer, but the movie will grow tiring quickly if the humour is played at the level of what we're seeing in those extended clips.

The set design and costumes are so good! It is honestly a huge mistake that the majority of the movie will probably take place in the human world. The plot of beloved children’s IP goes to the real world is tired and overdone. Having the whole movie take place in the Barbie world would have have been more entertaining and ambitious. 1

vale9001 Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 WOW Set and production design literally at another level. Everything is so great and very conceptual. Oscars are coming
Gossip_Boy Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 The level of detail, love and passion from the set designs to the costume designs to the direction is so impressive. They couldn’t have captured the Barbie lore more perfectly even if they tried. 1
Papi Juancho Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 why do some people want a deep script for a barbie movie... its a barbie movie, this just need to be dumb and camp that's all.
