Smarticle Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 the adult jokes.. i thought this was a classy party
PopMusicJunkie Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 I remember Mattel suing Aqua over "Barbie Girl" because they thought it sexualized Barbie back in the 90's. Aqua countersued saying she's a doll and Mattel read way too much into the lyrics. The case was ultimately dismissed so there was zero chance of "Barbie Girl" being used. However, I didn't know in, '09 Mattel released a version of "Barbie Girl" with alternate lyrics. OT: The aesthetics, easter eggs in the trailer are great. I'm seating no matter what, but I do agree the jokes really didn't quite land.
Poxy Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 My thoughts / predictions on what one of the plotpoints will be about: Spoiler Barbie and Ken will learn that, unlike Barbieland, girls in the real world don’t live as luxuriously and successfully as Barbie’s do. Why is it that there is a Barbie for every profession, including president, yet the Real World has never had one? Why is that when there are real world women in these same jobs Barbie’s hold, they get discriminated against? Is a successful woman only possible in a make-believe world? Kens exist to uplift, love and empower Barbie’s, yet real world men degrade and assault women on the daily, as they see them as inferior. Ryan Gosling Ken at first feels purposeless in life because the Barbie he likes, Margot, doesn’t like him back so he isn’t sure what the meaning of his life is if he can’t help make a Barbie’s dreams come true.
Kylizzle Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 Grace Randolph comparing the movie to Pleasantville has me intrigued.
Gorjesspazze9 Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 Movie is definitely not for me, but Margot looks gorgeous as always. I think it will serve Camp, but will be one of those movies that is bigger online then in real life
suneclipse121 Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 It seems like the reaction on here is mixed towards the new teaser. But I loved what I saw and I am genuinely excited for this movie. Never thought I would say that about a Barbie movie

And sorry but Ryan looks too crusty vs Margot who is 10 years younger, I’ll be watching but yeah this could backfire. I agree. It’s even more apparent when he’s opposite Simu Liu who looks 2 decades younger. They shoulda cast a younger heartthrob as Ken. I don’t know that Ryan can draw in male audience anyway.

Ooh I would love that Yeah I think there will be an entire ‘real world’ portion of the movie that we haven’t seen yet

You can see Barbie and Ken driving to the “real world” in the trailer. There’s a big billboard. Plus, pictures of them shooting at a beach in LA surrounded by actual people (who weren’t extras) came out a while ago.

Oh wow you’re so smart! /s I was saying that as a response to people acting like this will be the entire tone of the movie, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was only from the first 20 minutes
Uncatena Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 the fact that Life in the Dreamhouse is kind of like... 50 times funnier than anything in that trailer even though its aimed at a younger audience. plus its also extremely meta.
Wrecked Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 This looks really fun! I’ll definitely be beaching off in the back of the cinema.
Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 The way i can't stop replaying the trailer it's INSANE It's giving film of the year
ALittleGauche Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 My God, leave it to ATRL to be miserable downers. So many essays already about this or that movie being better than anything in a 2-minute trailer. Get a grip.
ATRL Moderator Ampersand13 Posted April 5, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted April 5, 2023 Trailer was fine, I think it did what it needed to do (demonstrate the world, introduce characters’ conflict, and establish some humor). This might just be a personal thing, but I honestly think trailers have become less and less indicative of a film’s actual merit. Maybe I just watch too many? But it seems kind of pointless to draw conclusions for a feature film based on two minutes of sequences taken out of context That being said, I do understand some of the more mixed reactions in here. Seems like the tone and jokes Noah and Greta are going with are not for everyone. I’m personally very excited! Was hoping to see America in the trailer though, but with such an enormous cast I’m under the impression that most are there for cameos/the background. Side note, I do think it’s kind of hilarious that Emma’s hair is black (I’m sure it has nothing to do with the Margot similarities, but I thought it was funny)
Gui Blackout Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 The way this movie has been dominating social media for the past 24h a cultural phenomenon already!
sunbathinganimal Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 visually it looks great but a lot of the jokes in the trailer were cringe
truthteller Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 so basically Dont Worry Darling mixed w/ White Noise
ATRL Moderator wehavetostan Posted April 5, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted April 5, 2023 19 hours ago, ChapelHooker said: it was alleged that the script was extremely funny, inventive and subversive. so far this is giving flat humor, blurry CGI and a story we've seen 100 times before. how was it supposed to show all that in 2 minutes
Uncatena Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 11 minutes ago, wehavetostan said: how was it supposed to show all that in 2 minutes absolutely not what I expected from this second teaser, I am just saying that so far, to me, personally, its not looking promising at all, overall. I'm still looking forward to it and we will probably get a better picture from the full trailer. I don't think it's funny or interesting what we've seen.
Antonini Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 If this trailer gave away the plot yall would be complaining that the trailer gave everything away. Some people here are so obsessed over a movie about BARBIE. Go play with some and make your own storylines if you’re so bothered. 💀 Having said that, looks cute, will be watching!

While I agree that some of the jokes in the trailer fell flat, the people writing off the entire movie because of a short trailer are doing too much.
