I'm intrigued to see what he does with the numbers in this though. God knows how they're going to stage "Defying Gravity". It works so well on stage, but could be laughable on film.
Aristocrat Posted April 28, 2022 Posted April 28, 2022 Two movies is definitely an interesting choice, but I think it gives them a lot of opportunity to take from the book series and also just their own interpretations and new, original content and music. I know Broadway stans want a copy and paste of the stage production, but clearly this isn't going to be that, otherwise, they easily could've done it in one 2 and a half hour+ movie. I think this is a combo of wanting to attempt to make it more of a cultural moment like Marvel or something, and also wanting more space to extend the story that they couldn't do with one movie. Universal clearly has a lot of faith in this movie to greenlight TWO movies, especially considering how some of their recent musical movies have gone. My only real complaint is the date... why 2024 for the first one? That's a little ridiculous. If they are still set to begin production in July, they would easily have the filming portion done by the end of 2022, I'd think? And that would give them almost a year of post production time. Christmas 2023 and Christmas 2024 would be a lot more exciting. The release dates just feel ridiculously far away to me.

My personal choices would be Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso and Game of Thrones as Madame Morrible. She has the look, the aura, and the vocal ability and theater past. And Jonathan Bailey from Bridgerton as Fiyero. I think Jordan Fisher could possibly get that role though, he seems to be a fan favorite choice. Hoping casting news is coming soon, seeing as rehearsals begin in less than 3 months.

Augmented Posted April 28, 2022 Posted April 28, 2022 I agree it’s an interesting choice to split the movies in two, at the same time tho Act 2 has No Good Deed and For Good and if they can absolutely nail them then that’s enough of a draw to go see Part 2 tbh.

Aristocrat Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 Cynthia said on Ellen that they still haven't even finished casting and she said something in another interview about how she has "plenty of time" to prepare for Elpbaba or something like that, so the 2024 date makes a lot more sense now. It seems like they're in no rush. Last we heard, rehearsals were set to begin in July, but that's approaching very quickly. If that's still even the plan, I predict they're going to give themselves a very long rehearsal period, seeing as they're now going to be basically filming two movies at once. I bet cameras won't even being rolling until September or October at this rate. And production will likely go into 2023.

With only a black backdrop and a solitary 'W' outlined in Elphaba-green, the upcoming two-parter Wicked films were teased to the fans at Licensing Expo. Though not much of the cast has been announced yet, director John Chu's (Crazy Rich Asians) adaptation of Broadway's enormously successful play is already getting buzz in its pre-production phase. With stars Cynthia Erivo playing the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba and Grammy-winner Ariana Grande playing her opposite, Galinda, fans can't wait to see their favorite Broadway numbers brought to the big screen. I'm expecting this could surprise at the Oscar
Aristocrat Posted June 6, 2022 Posted June 6, 2022 Since we're likely going to get more casting new soon (I hope) since production is just a few weeks away, I thought I'd share my fan casting for a few more of the major roles. Madame Morrible- I think Hannah Waddingham would be quite literally the perfect choice. She has the stature, build, and look to pull off such a regal and villainous character. She also has lots of experience in the musical theater world and has an incredible voice. She's also fresh off wins at the Emmys, Screen Actors Guild, and Critics Choice Awards wins for her role in Ted Lasso. Fiyero- Jonathan Bailey, fresh off of huge success leading Bridgerton season two would be great for the overly confident and hot male lead. He's conventionally handsome, is a great actor, and like Hannah, he also has experience on stage and in the musical theater world, and has a wonderful voice. Age wise, he's in between Ariana and Cynthia, so it could work. Dr Dillamond- Woody Harrelson The Wizard- Forest Whitaker I left Boq and Nessarose off because I feel like they should be newcomers/unknown talents.

Interestingly enough, just a few days ago, it was announced that Cynthia will be doing an event with Andre De Shields tomorrow, ahead of the Tonys.
