Those big award shows will always snub her no matter what. You would think that the massive critical acclaim would change that but I guess not. I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't receive an Oscar nom... Oh, imagine how tired we are.

Zoe winning the GG is not surprising. Emilia Pérez got 11 nominations, Wicked had 4 (1 of them being the gimmicky "box office" category). this voter body is eating up Emilia Pérez, likely because it's more international than other US award shows.

broadway year end rankings:

2024 #2, Lion King

2023 #3, Lion King + Hamilton

2022 #4, Music Man (Hugh Jackman limited run) + Hamilton + Lion King

2021 #2, Hamilton

2019 #4, Hamilton + Lion King + Mockingbird

2018 #3, Hamilton + Lion King

2017 #3, Hamilton + Lion King

2016 #3, Hamilton + Lion King

2015, 2014, 2013 #2, Lion King

2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004  #1

Since 2013 it beat Lion King once and now just beat Hamilton for the first time.

(Though this doesn't tell the complete story as some theaters are bigger than others, so for example Book of Mormon was quite big but wicked has 78% more available seats so Mormon never had a bigger gross.)

I wonder if Wicked will be launched back to #1 for 2025 and 2026 thanks to the movie.

fuming. ariana's time will come

I just hate that awards shows are more about the stars aligning than they are about objective quality. We'll see if For Good gets more praise as it will have more gravitas to the role.

Wicked still went home with a Golden Globe essentially for being a pop culture phenomenon. The fact that it took any is an accomplishment in itself as these higher up award ceremonies don't often favor musicals this kindly. Good for them!

the golden globes love musicals. la la land, west side story, Emilia perez

people still make fun of them for voting for Madonna as evita over frances's oscar winning performance

Jon Chu's speech was moving, I'm happy to finally see him receive an award (even though it's for the movie and not him as a producer). It looks like since the movie came out, it was all about Cynthia or Ari while he didn't really get the acclaim he deserves.

I hope so but she was so excellent and universally praised in part 1

Would need great luck that pt 2 is equally or more acclaimed or she will do much better. This awards season is her best chance.

Globes aren't much of a precursor for other awards so we shouldn't count wicked out yet but this is a worrying sign that it might not do as well as we hoped in awards season. Bafta's, CC and SAG will be more of an indicator. I really want at least Cynthia to win something though obviously I'd love awards for them both.

Part 2 is always going to be trickier. Sequels struggle more in award season, part 1 has all the best songs and tbh part 2 only has a couple of songs that are even memorable, part 2 of the stage musical is widely disliked, Glinda is a villain for most of it so that won't help Ari. They could still pull it out of the bag but part 1 was the best shot.

The current scenario wasn't even in our wildest dreams when the movie was in the works, I said I'll be happy if it's a commercial success OR a critical success, and it ended up with both.

It's not your typical awarded movie so it's fine tbh.

When I see all the deleted scenes on social media, they should've definitely released a long version / Director's Cut version of the movie in theaters. I know that many people would've gladly gone to watch it again and it would've been a good idea to boost the numbers.

One thing really bothering me about the campaigning going into For Good is how Cynthia was the first to tease she had a part in writing a new original song for her character and not Ariana. I'm sorry but Ari is the musician and that Best Original Song push should be hers (if she has a part in writing hers.. which I think if Cynthia does Ariana must...)

Cynthia Erivo is already an Oscar-nominated songwriter. Ariana is not the only musician out of the two of them, so to say that the Best Original Song push should be hers is a bizarre narrative to try and take here. Clearly a decision was made for Cynthia to announce that information at this point. Just because Cynthia was involved in co-writing her song doesn't necessarily mean Ariana was with hers.

Both Ariana and Cynthia already won great awards for this film and a Golden Globe nomination alone is amazing. An Oscar nomination would be the cherry on top. :jonny6:

Also, there is For Good still coming and depending on if Ariana co-wrote the song, she might have a shot at getting Best Original Song. Cynthia is confirmed to have written the song as well, so the chances for her song getting a nomination is improving. I wonder if two songs from the same movie can get into the category though?

Let's not get depressed by the Golden Globes though. Part I is hitting $700m WW around or shortly after this weekend, the Critic's Choice Awards are held this week on Sunday and the BAFTAs are coming in 6 weeks, also the most important one - the Academy Award nominations, are being announced in 10 days from now on, on January 17th!

Mostly I'm just miffed that Emelia Perez is getting awards. I don't think Wicked necessarily deserves to sweep as much as I love it but Emelia Perez is a mediocre film imo. So hopefully that's just the globes. Really I only expect Wicked to have a shot at actress, supporting actress and maybe some awards for like hair/makeup/production design ect. I kinda did expect Cynthia to have more of a narrative behind her this season.

I think 2 songs can be eligible at the same category. We will see.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but CC seems like her best shot at winning.

I don't know, though — I never expected Ari to win a GG either.

The Oscar nomination is the most important one for Ari. I really hope both Cynthia and Ariana get nominated.

win is a stretch tho.
