Feetree Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 Is 1 bil WW possible? I understand some markets have not opened

For now it's like $400M-$500M domestic, $200M-$250M overseas. Let's see how China and Germany receive this. Edited November 28, 2024 by Jude

I understand some markets have not opened I'm not an expert, but I follow the box office casually and I think it is certainly possible. Based on its current tracking, I would expect it to be a little shy of 1 billion (600M-800M). But I don't think anyone should EVER count out a musical especially in the holiday season. I remember how Frozen and the Greatest Showman both had incredible holds and outperformed any expectations. The wanka movie last year also did better than I think anyone expected. Of course we can also recount more musicals that underperformed (wish, in the heights, cats etc) but based on current performance, Wicked seems to be in the over-perform category. The big wild card are the grosses outside the U.S. While the wizard of Oz story might be among the most known films/books/stories in American culture, my understanding is it is not quite as ubiquitous elsewhere. As a result, I expect debuts in countries that are not indicative of a 1 billion total. We would then need to see if the film has great holds. Edited November 28, 2024 by byzantium 3
Dreamboy Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 I've always been a sucker for musical films, but this one really hit me hard (even harder than Hairspray, which has always been my favorite). I had prior knowldge of the musical and how important it is on the Broadway scene, a friend of mine is a huge fan and introduced me to it with a video of Defying Gravity. I liked it but didn't gave much attention. As the movie premiere was getting closer and closer I started to get pretty anxious bc it all seemed wonderful and I was curious as hell, I decided to listen to the full Broadway album and must say it was love at first hearing hahaha As for the film, it definitely is the best movie of the year and I hope it gets a lot of awards next year. The beginning is grand in itself, the film is visually beautiful and each musical number is more enchanting than the last. I cried so much over the first Dr. Dillamond scene and how Elphaba identified with him because they were different. It really touched me seeing that message on the blackboard and both reacting to that. Dancing Through Life only increased my love for the song, Fiyero was gorgeous and the musical number is a spectacle. Jonathan Bailey is on fire and I can't wait to see more of him on part 2. Madame Morrible surprises, I expected her to show a villainous side but she manages to deceive VERY WELL. Michelle Yeoh delivered, as usual. Defying Gravity, well, what can I say? I cried from start to finish, it's apotheotic! I already want the soundtrack with the live vocals and I can't wait for November 2025. I plan to review it next weekend with my friends and then watch it dubbed too because I'm dying to see how the songs turned out in portuguese. Ariana's Oscar is coming, her Glinda is a lot of fun. And Cynthia was wonderful from start to end. Now that I've seen the film, I can understand the love that people have for the musical, for the story. Now my heart is full of love for this tale too, and I really want to see the live musical in March. The soundtrack is playing nonstop, and actually it helps me a lot to forget some things that bother me and make me feel sad. I guess this came just in the right time for me. 7 1
Dancehall Queen Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 Dulcibear was kind of that *****. I'm surprised I didn't see anything about her before I saw Wicked today. 3

You are right. I looked at some prior years and it seems movies tend to go up the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Christmas Eve tends to be a lower box office day or Wednesday in general so I was a little surprised but it makes sense.
Dula Peep Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 Cynthia will win the BA Oscar... bookmark me. 1

Can't wait for part 2. There was a moment of disturbance tho. A girl started crying at the beginning of the movie when she realized that this isn't Moana 2. The threater showed a clip of Moana and the girl thought they were showing that today. 4
Lovett Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 Just booked to see this again in IMAX tomorrow evening, and then I'm supposed to be seeing it for a third time on Saturday afternoon with a friend. I'm obsessed. 2

Hopefully I'm wrong, as that would mean musical films are not death... but with moana 2 coming and next week thanksgiving week's effect is over... I dont see it pass 350M. Sorry.
ariananext Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 I kept wondering why there was no Moana screenings in my city, then I found out it's called Oceana here in Italy to avoid homonymy with a known porn star 1 9

You think it's not getting another $100M in the rest of its run? 6
