Watched it last night at the cinema and I'm still on a high. A future classic, I'm sure of it. 

 

Like many Ari fans, I wasn't coping with her slowly transitioning away from the full-time popstar gig, but mannn, after watching her in this movie you realize how she's able to give so much more artistry & depth in a versatile role like this. Awards season can come. 

 

Ari kinda overshadows Cynthia in the beginning, but then Cynthia completely takes over. She's amazing. 

 

Jeff Goldblum is such a warm & heartfelt personality. I loved him

 

I'm back at the cinema on Monday, I gotta rewatch this lol

I managed to catch it on friday and I really enjoyed it, it's a great adaption.

 

I will preface by saying that, like many, I had been extremely skeptical regarding the movie, with every new production/casting announcement sounding worst than the last, and trailers that showed and spoiled almost the entire movie. but all the positive reactions from the last couple of weeks really started to hype me up 

 

like many a theater gay, I have been obsessed with Wicked ever since I first saw it in 2008 and it has been a huge part of my life.

 

overall I think they pulled it off, especially the two-part gimmick. it felt extremely surreal to see it at the cinema after all these years

 

I really cannot stand Cynthia (the Azealia Banks of theater iykyk) but there's no denying that she's great in this and Defying Gravity was insane. 

 

Ariana was also great, but I had a bit of a problem with her Glinda characterization. I am aware that performing Glinda exactly as it is on stage wouldn't translate well to film, but I found her Glinda way too muted which kinda threw me off. 

 

what I really didn't like however was all that horrible CGI . I love that they went for an Golden Age Era Hollywood with the vintage studio/title cards and big production feel, but all of that was thrown out the window with 90% of the movie looking like a lifeless video game.

 

and also I'm super happy that Jon M Chu is getting all this success and that people love the movie so much, but he's such a TACKY director with zero subtlety and the movie suffers a bit from it in my opinion. 

 

the Original Broadway Cast recording is completely ingrained into my brain so at first it was a bit weird to listen to the new soundtrack, but here I think they also pulled it off in creating their own versions for a new audience. I just find the soundtrack album to be a tad overproduced.

 

but yeah, overall I thought it was good and can't wait for part two

No one in their right mind ever believed or predicted 200m domestic. The highest predictions were at 150m.

Well, for now it's impossible to have official numbers out though since it's Sunday morning and we still have a day to go to have a better overview of the numbers. 

 

Also, maybe you were talking about the most recent predictions, but if you take every prediction into account from earlier on as well, you'll see that anything over 100m opening is something no one has even imagined for this musical film. 

 

So, a 100m domestic opening weekend is more than fantastic.  Any number higher is just the cherry on top, in my opinion.

Just finished my 2nd screening and wow,it's much better the second time. I still cried 3 times. My premium seat cinema was almost full and so many were sobbing and laughing but no one dared to sing. It was a great time!

Everyone (but actually not everyone) expected that number because of the strong presales. But MIND YOU. Last year everyone expected this movie to bomb and Ariana to get razzies. When the first trailer came out everyone said the same thing. They cursed this movie to flop so hard! Then the strong presales came and some predictors overreacted and gave over-estimations. Point is during the early campaign of this movie, nobody expected this to open $100M+. $100M+ debut is amazing no matter what other people say.

Did you read the article? The $200M figure was a combined opening prediction for both Gladiator and Wicked: 

 

"The target for Wicked looks to be around $150 million, while Gladiator II could post $50 million. A combined total of $200 million is within reach..."

We do, I live in a town where's there's a regal cinema which is an independent chain compared to the likes of Cineworld and all the showings for this weekend were full, didn't realise that many people lived where I do 

 

I had to go to an actual city to watch it yesterday and even then I had to go early in the morning as all the afternoon/evening times were sold out or crap seats

$110 million would still challenge for third biggest domestic box office opening of the year, right? I don't get the drags. Maybe the higher predictions were global predictions. Anyone reasonable was saying $100M+ was the target - myself included.

 

The story of this year at the box office is it's becoming increasingly difficult to get asses in seats for anything other than blockbuster franchise sequels, especially Marvel / Disney. $600-$700 million for an adaptation of a theater production that yes is popular in the US but is not very well known overseas would be fantastic. It's already going to make a profit for both movies before we even get to the second, like how is that not a success
