These tweets feel very mean spirited…

People have been looking forward to the Wicked movie for well over a decade. It's a much loved project so there's real pressure for it to be good.

99% of the reviews so far are positive and like 80% of them are extremely positive. This movie is going to blow off everyone's expectations. :WAP:

The Oscar buzz for Wicked seems to be legit too. Ariana is currently #3 in the predictions for Best Supporting Actress and rising. She's getting unanimous raves from the early reactions. There is also room for a populist, blockbuster movie like Wicked to get in this year.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gaga stans on twitter are lowkey trying to spark some kind of concerted backlash towards Wicked.

Because it'll make Joker 2 look even more like a horrible musical box office bomb.

would be huge if Ariana was an Oscar nominated actress with her first major film role :jonny5:not holding my breath (The Academy is even snobbier than the Recording Academy) but damn, would be cool

I too was very skeptical at first when the initial reactions came out mentioning Oscar buzz but every early reaction from influencer and industry people (critics, journalists, pundits) are saying Wicked is a legit contender, especially highlighting Ariana's performance. The Oscars are definitely snobby but they do love a good re-framing of the narrative and a discovery story which Ariana could fill this award season. They have demonstrated in the past they have no issue with nominating pop stars/musicians: Cher, Lady Gaga, Queen Latifah, Will Smith, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Bette Midler, Jennifer Hudson, Frank Sinatra, Mary J. Blige, Andra Day, Doris Day, Bing Crosby, Peggy Lee, Mark Wahlberg, etc. All known initially as pop stars/musicians/singers and got Oscar nominations for acting, some even winning and getting multiple Oscar nominations throughout their careers. There is longstanding historical precedent for Ariana to score a nomination in this regard.

Best Supporting Actress is a category that is more open to nominating and even winning for musicals and comedic performances. Jennifer Hudson, Ariana DeBose, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Anne Hathaway - all winning Best Supporting Actress for performances in musicals. Ryan Gosling was nominated in Best Supporting Actor last year for a comedic performance in Barbie. Melissa McCarthy got nominated in Best Supporting Actress for Bridesmaids. Marisa Tomei won Best Supporting Actress for her comedic performance in My Cousin Vinny. If these early reactions are accurate about the movie getting overwhelmingly positive reception and Ariana's performance being the standout (I think this positivity will materialize in official reviews, even is some of the reactions are likely hyperbolic to a degree) - Ariana has a very realistic chance to get in.

She is campaigning as well. She and the cast just attended two awards screenings and did a Q&A session for voters, one for SAG members which according to attendees at the screening the movie was incredibly well-received and they were eating up Ariana's performance. Cynthia and Ariana attended the Oscars earlier this year to present an award, went to the Academy Museum Gala a couple weeks ago, her hosting SNL which received praise and acclaim by the public and industry, she headlined the Met Gala & performed with Cynthia. A good amount of the attendees present at the Met Gala are guild and Academy voters. Wicked is also Universal's biggest movie and awards player this year so they will campaign hard for it.

The Academy does have a bias against fantasy and genre movies in general, but I don't see that being as much of a major concern for Wicked like some people expect it to be. They've been a little more open-minded lately in regards to genre movies, especially since they expanded Best Picture to 10 nominations. It's a weak year and they usually nominate at least 2 populist blockbusters and Wicked could fill that spot along with Dune Part 2 (obviously pending official reviews and reception, but like I said I'm cautiously optimistic about it). Wicked's connection to one of the most beloved and revered American films of all time being The Wizard of Oz could help it immensely too. Not to mention Wicked's reputation on Broadway and it being a cultural phenomenon. Many actors and performers that vote for these awards are also probably fans of the stage musical so the fantasy bias might not even become a thing for this movie. Box office is going to be huge too which is another win for its award chances.

Overall, all these paragraphs (lol sorry for the novel, I can never be concise) to say I think Ariana and the movie are legit contenders for major nominations and her pop stardom won't be much of a negative against her at all, actually probably a positive since it gives her a compelling narrative throughout award season. She's pretty well-respected in the industry and by her peers for her talent. Tbh will be interesting to see how she and Selena do this award season since they both are contenders in the same category and both are receiving buzz. Would be really cool to see them both get in which is possible, the category is open with the only lock being Zoe Saldana at the moment.

I can't wait for the RT score to drop for this

I've seen the musical 3 times in London, so of course I'm gonna see this first day of release but the promo by Cynthia and Ariana has been a rollercoaster of good and bad vibes ...

Also we've been burned so many times in the past by early reactions and bought fans that disguise themselves as critics. I'm quite anxious for the embargo lift next tuesday.

Apparently the review embargo lifts on the 19th so just a couple days before release annoyingly

everything is going perfect so far  minus the cynthia poster controversy and the barbie dolls having a porn website printed on the box

pre-sale numbers are huge, first social media reactions are RAVING, the press tour has been picture perfect. now let's hope when the actual review embargo lifts next week, the rotten tomatoes score is good, and they might really pull this off and have a MASSIVE critical and commercial hit on their hands :jonny5:

I will never understand the criticism of an actor or actress being "too" extra during a promo campaign.

Very excited to see this by the way. :gaycat3:
