Can this top Barbie's 155m opening weekend?

It would have to start pacing significantly higher. It's not impossible, but not likely yet.

OT: The film has a $145M budget. Needs to basically hit $290M domestic and $362.5M internationally to break even. I'm hopeful the numbers rise.

How is this film projected to do so well? Barbie's release felt way bigger and the numbers are not that far off so far

Wicked won't do big numbers like Barbie, it will probably do about half of Barbie's BO total gross

the reason is doing better on pre-sales it's because Barbie really picked up steam during the press tour with Margot's outfits (3-4 weeks before the premiere) and it was a hit with the GP and they don't really buy tickets that much in advance

on the other hand, Broadway fans are very known for buying tickets months in advance, to that add the tickets from die hard Ariana fans and big Wicked fans, that's why the pre-sales were really good, but it won't out debut Barbie, I see a 100M debut weekend and obviously not having the longevity Barbie had, think of it like a Marvel movie (gross concentrated in the first week)

And the fact that it will compete against Moana 2 and Mufasa in the coming weeks after its release will make it hard to have strong legs like Barbie, unless its WoM is really, really impactful and the soundtrack goes viral for a long time.

Isn't 'A Star Is Born' also a musical?

I don't trust Industry push tbh. The real test is if the Wicked audiences and the GP rave about it.

I want this to be good so I'm optimistic!

These early reviews from industry people actually sometimes means the movie is not that good. So I would take it with a pintch of salt.

The flash and joker 2 was great according to insiders.

If these are the same insiders who said that JokerFAD was great and that the way the songs were incorporated into the story was super smart… we're screwed

The industry really needs a smash after FAD, so they might be hyping it up. I'm excited regardless; I love the original musical.

I take insiders with a grain of salt this early before release but there have been screenings for fans of the stage musical and for some influencers which have raved about it so that's promising.

This is not comparable to Joker 2 in any capacity since Wicked is actually being made for its audience.

Someone who watched the early screening of the movie shared their non spoiler honest review, here (username is chasehilton22):

Apparently this prediction is based on surveys rather than ticket sales, so take it with a grain of salt. They were pretty off with their J:FAD prediction. Still, I think the $120 million+ predictions are way too high. I could see it maybe somewhere in between, especially while IMAX showings are still limited.

Ignore Deadline. They also lowballed Barbie. Literally no reason to post their prediction here.
