PlERRE Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 (edited) The Met Gala is where celebrities ascend to style icon status. On the first Monday in May, stars don’t just walk the red carpet, they climb the steps of the Metropolitan Museum in statement couture presenting their interpretation of the exhibition’s theme to the entire world. Unlike an awards show or a premiere, the goal isn’t to shine for a moment, it’s to create a look that resonates for decades. Despite the wealth of designer gowns and bespoke suits, few accomplish that feat, but those who do earn themselves a place in fashion history. The greatest hits—Rihanna’s papal chic, Kate Moss’s golden turban, Sarah Jessica Parker’s tartan Alexander McQueen, Erykah Badu’s glittering top hat, Madonna in a hippie caftan—rank among the best outfits ever to be worn. And their charms wouldn’t have been as compelling on another night. The gala encourages the kind of innovation rarely seen elsewhere. The Costume Institute’s trove of landmark runway creations serves as an inspiration for guests, allowing them to take on fashion at its most avant-garde. Where else will you see Cardi B. and a small army of assistants move a mountainous red Thom Browne train across a pink carpet? Or watch awestruck as Lady Gaga and Brandon Maxwell take their magenta nesting doll ballgown to the streets, much to the delight of New Yorkers. A standout Met look can be performative (Amber Valletta going full baroque in 2004), subversive (Daphne Guinness in a plume of McQueen feathers in 2011), witty (Karolina Kurkova’s playful Viktor and Rolf in 2015, or referential (the Olsen twins and their yearly vintage surprise), it just can’t be boring. https://www.vogue.com/slideshow/met-gala-best-dressed-all-time/amp Edited April 26, 2022 by PlERRE
BOOMBAYAH Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 It’s still shocking to me that Beyoncé has not had a truly show-stopping ensemble for this event, and even when she looks great she’s always out-shone. I really want her to deliver a jaw-dropping moment, but I think she’s kind of over it now. Also I feel as though as the years go by, the Met Gala becomes less and less of an event, mostly due to how “accessible” it has become which renders the mystique and glamour of it dry, but also because it feels like no one actually tries to be on theme or intellectually respect high fashion, they either try to look cute for Instagram or ridiculous for online engagement. It really peaked in the early 2010s, back then it was a nice mix of Hollywood fantasy, whilst also being a globally viewed event.

Diocles Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 Gaga is the biggest fashion icon so no surprise here

Gaga and Bey don't attend MET that often, I think that's why!
*-ChriZ-* Posted April 26, 2022 Posted April 26, 2022 The fact they included that hideous Swift ensemble and didnt include Beys stunning 2013 look invalidates the list tbh

I don't think any of her looks though have outright tried and failed to make a show-stopping moment, they're all mostly gowns, she's not going over the top to get attention, which imo is in keeping with the history and purpose of the Met Gala. It was never about dressing for the theme, it's not a costume party, it's a gala at the costume institute.
