Activist commits suicide in front of Supreme Court in name of climate change action

Mods: Let me know if the title veers too close to the issue of "disturbing" topics since normally I'd be adverse to highlighting issues of self-harm, but the act itself on Earth Day (and the lack of media coverage) feels like it's close to news-worthiness in and of itself.

Shooting yourself is one thing, but self immolating? Cannot imagine what must go through someone's head to carry them through that act

when i opened this thread i was reminded of the monk who did this in vietnam in protest in the 70s and was famously photographed, and i guess that's the vibe he was going for too since it seems he was a monk. really sad though rip to him. it feels even sadder to do it on the supreme court and just become like a headline. tw if you google the pics cus theyre violent, thich quang duc

Damn

reminds me of the several ppl doing this in my country in protest of the government several years ago

hopefully they really take a stand and do more (or something?)..but rly feels like it would be an empty cause until it's too late..

I know he likely thought he would me a bit martyr but this is like a blip, it hasn’t even trended on twitter yet. I’m not sure this is big enough to overtake the election stuff and the war news.

Considering Biden (of the supposedly more environmentally-conscious party) has okayed more drilling permits in 1 year than Trump (of the climate denialist party) did in 4... Hard to see how that changes. Both parties are beholden to oil companies. And Joe Biden is pretty much the least environmentally-conscious president we've ever had at a time we're staring down the barrel of unmitigated catastrophe.

That's because the people who care about the environment being destroyed are not enough to vote in big enough quantities to outnumber the vast majority of voters who are old and thus do not care about the conditions of a world they will not be alive to see. The rest of the population is too apathetic to care. Miami being underwater in 3 decades is not urgent enough of an issue when much of the country is living paycheck to paycheck and can't afford to have even $1,000 set aside for an emergency.

I know it's sad to say, but this probably is counterproductive.

Climate change is set towards a point that won't change. It's beaded in our economic system, and we live our lives and form omorals around said economic system, so this cannot be a a quick fix.

Making no noise. Of the news reports that do mention this, none of them connect it to environmental activism.

I agree with the second paragraph 100%. The economic status quo is built around systems that inherently drive climate change, destruction and pollution, and no vague promises from the gov about ""pursuing renewable energy"" or whatever is gonna fix that

I don't think activism is always counterproductive, but this kind of stuff is just fuel for critics to say activists are crazy/violent

Yeah I usually just go pass where Thich Quang Duc set himself on fire. There is even a big statue of him right there so people can visit and remember him.

:doc: I was just there a few weeks ago, would have been pretty morbid to witness as a bystander. Sad that he chose such a gruesome way to go.
