Trash Posted April 22, 2022 Posted April 22, 2022 I guess she chose the Dinsey icon award over this... Can't say i blame her because the VMAs have been tragic for a while. Glad Britney has both tho.
Erreur2 La Nature Posted April 22, 2022 Posted April 22, 2022 Her videos are not memorable, opposite to her peers.

swissman Posted April 22, 2022 Posted April 22, 2022 Well tbh the VMAs have been pretty open-minded about who they should give an award titled "Vanguard", so why not her, I guess. But if I am to answer according to the same reasons I'd cite for the above, it's because her oeuvre isn't exactly something that has pushed the art of music videos or video-making forward. Her videos may have included ideas that were new/important (like the gay kiss) but the videos themselevs, while of quality, didn't lead to new ideas or developments in the industry of music videos, as the term "vanguard" denotes.

Otherwise, no one would win this award. Her work for ST alone, I think, was enough for her to get it in 2014. Though visual albums as an idea wasn't entirely new, no one was really doing it, and no one did it like her so it made such a huge impact in the industry proven now by the many visual albums that others have released since, including Justin Bieber, Fergie, and Kacey Musgraves just to name a few. But even outside of 2013, Beyoncé has always made great videos. Her debut era is nothing but polish. B'Day saw her toy with the idea of a visual album, then called a "Video Anthology", recording a video for every song on the album but one (plus videos for a few bonus tracks). During IASF she had Single Ladies which was innovative in that it was a major departure from the type of highly edited, costumed, and directed pop music videos. During 4 she also recorded far more videos than she had singles, pushing forward the idea of videos as promotional materials not just elements of a single release. I'd argue that had Beyoncé not made her first visual album, she wouldn't qualify for the award since all her videos had been more-or-less [great] standard fare, but what she did in 2013 was game-changing and important, and she more than deserved it.
Edit0rz Posted April 22, 2022 Posted April 22, 2022 Lack of taste I fear. She certainly had better video's than Justin, Pink and early Beyonce, on par with Britney at least. Fighter, Dirrty, Lady Marmalade, Candyman, Beautiful and Hurt are all GREAT video's. Aint no other man and The voice within are effective as well.
