Janelle Monae identifying as non-binary

Janelle Monáe is clarifying her gender identity.
On an episode of Red Table Talk, the singer declared that she is nonbinary. The 36-year-old previously came out as pansexual, meaning that she's attracted to people regardless of their sex or gender identity, in 2018 when she was on the cover of Rolling Stone. In 2020, she seemed to identify as nonbinary when she retweeted a meme with the hashtag #IAmNonbinary before telling Variety that she was "exploring." On Wednesday, she explained just how she's come to terms with who she is.

"I’m nonbinary, so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely. I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the 'he' or the 'she,'" she said. "And if I am from God, I am everything. I am everything. But I will always, always stand with women. I will always stand with Black women. But I just see everything that I am. Beyond the binary."
The Memory Librarian author, who did not declare her preferred pronouns, went on to say that she sees other people for their "energy" rather than their gender. Most importantly, identifying as nonbinary has allowed her to explore relationships in different ways.
"I feel like that opens you up to fall in love … with any beautiful spirit," she said.
Despite the joy that she feels in where she is today and the pride that she has in sharing it, the process of coming out is one that Monáe described as very personal.

They’ve been cross dressing for years. This is not shocking. I wish they had found mainstream success in music

I wish Janelle had clarified her preferred pronouns, though since she didn't I assume we're still allowed to refer to her as "she/her" until told otherwise? Not that we speak of her that often on ATRL, anyway.

Wow, so brave and stunning :)

I have TRIED to understand NB identity but for the love of God, I do not understand. There is no one on this planet who lives life strictly according to gender stereotypes. If I am female and I enjoy building things and chopping trees, does that mean I have to identify out of being a woman? :doc:

I am not trying to be obtuse. Someone help a sis out.

I way prefer your attitude, I think it's much more freeing and real :celestial6: Personally I think people should be who they are without having to announce or explain it

In a nutshell I think it's about social media, which puts more emphasis on labels, and ego / attention.
I'll put more thoughts in the spoiler:

Spoiler

Social media is a huuuge part of it, because it's kinda led to this cultural obsession with categories, labels, microlabels, and other ways of defining your identity online with words. And what makes it worse is it gets rewarded like a trophy with attention and "they're so brave" and people going yasssss on twitter, and all it takes is a random interview. Whereas plenty of artists are just themselves express themselves how they want, and don't need to make some attention grabbing statement about how brave and unique they are

But labeling everything only invites more judgment and gatekeeping in the end. It feels kind of backwards to me; people who are 'nonbinary' want to reject the ideas of strict gender labels and stereotypes, so they embrace a different label, which inevitably comes with new stereotypes...

To be kind of cynical, I think it's not a coincidence that artists tend to announce they're nonbinary when they're not getting much attention or success (or they're in a scene where it's very much in vogue to be queer is a "modern" way and they wanna fit in)

I fear the non binary is the 2020s version of bisexuality in 2010s among popstars. Good for her though.
