I like this, something about the production is giving me 80s vibes.

ooh it's so cute!

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - New York City Lights

I forgot how fun this is!

Posted

Goldfrapp - Anymore

It's no Felt Mountain but I still like it

Posted

Black Honey - Midnight

I like the production of this, it's fun, rock bop :loud:

Posted

BoA - Fox

omg I was blasting this album in 2015 or so, it's just so much fun!! :jonny5:

Jessie J - Abracadabra

Wow this is one of the best songs I've ever heard :celestial:I love magic too

Posted (edited)

Ethel Cain - Gibson Girl: nearly sent this because people stan but i, in fact, don't like the vibe all that much!

Rachel Chinouriri - All I Ever Asked: cute and sultry with some lovely rich textures which her voice blends nicely into

Ari Lennox - Pressure: it's nice but feels a bit sparse and old school for my liking

SUNMI - 1/6: this was pleasant and kind of lightly dreamy. kinda forgettable and generic? perhaps, but nice all the same

Lauren Jauregui - Don’t Wanna Say: not bad. the tempo is just....... kinda dreary, and i dont know if its sexy enough to justify it? but there were some lovely elements + interesting instrumentation x

Tkay Maidza & UMI - Onto Me: nice enough, could score!

Girls’ Generation - Genie: vaguely catchy and pleasant, bops a bit

Mura Masa - 1 Night (feat. Charli XCX): honestly this song had potential with that memorable hook but it just doesn't come together, the finishing is bad

Sudan Archives - Down On Me: I actually think this is very decent but it didn't really GRAB me at all

YUKIKA - Soul Lady: snatched, so intricate

Anitta - Versions Of Me: objectively this is kinda bad but I was undeniably bopping!

Laura Mvula - Safe Passage: it's nice... I don't like the texturally empty moments at all, and the tempo drags a little, but the fuller moments make up for it

Black Honey - Midnight: I don't hate it exactly, there's interesting choices made although the end result isn't that pleasant, it's def a weaker choice overall for me

Jessie J - Abracadabra: is it catchy? yes. is it juvenile and cringe also? yes! Plus that plain and slightly shrill tone of hers is not it

Joyce Wrice - Iced Tea: okayyyyy now this is a vibe! gorgeous

fromis_9 - DM: it's nice and well structured but kinda forgettable

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - New York City Lights: the chorus line kinda lets it down hard because the energy is v nice, the vocal refrain works well and loooove the bridge also but there's just no pay off

Goldfrapp - Anymore: very interesting textures and instrumentation leading to a result which feels modern and fresh to this day, cool entry

BoA - Fox: starts badly, picks up for sure but never develops beyond a run of the mill pop song

Jae Stephans - got it like that: eh, it's okay to me. feels like it was built on a bed of generic spotipop fluff and then levelled up slightly

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - New York City Lights

I've always loved the album name, Trip the Light Fantastic, there's some whimsy to it, same with this song I guess. There's some good moments here, the chorus is a bit of a drag compared to the rest though.

Posted

yeah feeling totally safe this round

Posted

Joyce Wrice - Iced Tea

Doesn't really stand out in the round

Posted

Goldfrapp - Anymore

Something about this song's production made me think of the cool, crisp crunch of biting into fresh celery or carrots, idk that's just what popped into my mind, maybe it's my meds. I enjoyed it tbh.

BoA - Fox

BoA is one of the first kpop artists I ever heard, so she has a special place in my heart :heart2: This is really cute :gaycat4:

Ethel Cain - Gibson Girl: not into this at all

Rachel Chinouriri - All I Ever Asked: cuter than i expected, it’s not bad at all

Ari Lennox - Pressure: very cute but went nowhere

SUNMI - 1/6: kind of sleepy to me but not bad

Lauren Jauregui - Don’t Wanna Say: actually i really liked this, best so far

Tkay Maidza & UMI - Onto Me: i do like this and will get points, but Tkay had many better options, this is so random

Girls’ Generation - Genie: oh baby absolutely not… dated in the worst way

Mura Masa - 1 Night (feat. Charli XCX): this song aged like milk, it’s so annoying now

Sudan Archives - Down On Me: ngl i’ve always found her music very boring, sorry, but maybe it will get something

YUKIKA - Soul Lady: it’s the snappening

Anitta - Versions Of Me: the dragging when this just sounds like any Dua Lipa song…. actually now that we’re at the chorus, it’s starting to annoy me a bit but idk

Laura Mvula - Safe Passage: no laura mvula no points >:( her voice lich rally hurts me ears, how does anyone listen to her, one of the most unlikable tones I have EVER heard. and past that, this song just sucks, the melody is annoying and is extremely unmemorable, the production is this terrible derivative dream pop, the lyrics are doing nothing, there's no dynamic evolution to this it's just flat the whole time. this song is ******* terrible, delete it!

Black Honey - Midnight: yeah I don’t like this, I’m sorry :(

Jessie J - Abracadabra: I can’t @ someone actually sending this but glad to see we are ALL enjoying! this is such a bop

Joyce Wrice - Iced Tea: very typical Kaytranada, I like it but wish it went somewhere, it’s so flat

fromis_9 - DM: kpop release of the year, really like this song

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - New York City Lights: this is cute but I cannot stand her vocals

Goldfrapp - Anymore: such a random choice from her, but I like this and her style

BoA - Fox: ahhh this song is so cute and blissful, love

Jae Stephans - got it like that: this song is kind of odd, it’s ok

Are you serious? It's one thing to not be a fan but to say her voice hurts your ears is doing WAY too much, I would probably play this song to my newborn child if I had one, her voice is beautiful and crisp, there's a gorgeous fragility to it that melts into your ears like an egg yolk dripping down your head, so... you should probably get your ears checked :biblio:  or don't and keep showing your TRASH, ignorant taste :bibliahh:

To call it "derivative dream pop" is an oxymoron, there's a really progressive and dense sound design in the genre here that you don't find in much other mainstream music. You can tell in the structure of the song, maybe if you would pay attention for more than FIVE seconds, jesus. It has a V/C/C/V/B/C structure which is pretty unique and the song is in 5/4 time. Literally what about that is generic? Sorry if you don’t get aleatory music. And how is it unmemorable if her vocals were THAT noticeable to you? You just contradict yourself over and over again. Come on :bibliahh: No dynamic evolution? I bet you sent some lame song that doesn't even have a chorus :bibliahh:

Also... she literally based all of this on her religious beliefs, so to drag the lyrics is actually quite insensitive. And not sure what's wrong with them either way, it's a very uplifting track. You sound super miserable lol. Like I'm sorry but you're just wrong. Everything about your """"critique"""" is misinformation regarding the song, just admit you're a biased hater and go, you're annoying as **** :bibliahh:

With all due respect, you are wrong and everything you said is wrong. First of all it's clearly in basic 4/4 time, you clearly do not know a thing about music. Also I mean the MELODY is extremely forgettable, it's completely meandering and sounds like she's throwing darts at a keyboard and singing whatever notes she hits. What IS memorable is how terrible her voice sounds, she has zero vibrato and no dynamic range so it just sounds like she screams everything. But just because I remember how awful her voice sounds doesn't mean the song is good.

V/C/C/V/B/C structure? This song hardly has structure at all. It just wanders about, it sounds like she's making it up as she goes. Instruments float in and out in a way that doesn't make any sense and feels entirely arbitrary. As for the lyrical inspiration, if I write Row Row Row Your Boat and say it was inspired by a family member's passing, does that make it good? Of course not. It's not about the inspiration but the end result, and her end result is garbage. Maybe you're the one who should get their ears checked. I mean, god, there is nothing to enjoy here.

I am allowed to not enjoy this sad excuse for a song, and I cannot wait to kick your sorry ass out of this competition. Period.

Are your ears twisted to the side or something? Because it's definitely in 5/4. A 4/4 song wouldn't have so much duple meter. And the way she SINGS the melody is important and can carry it. I guess you always listen to people who can't sing and are relying on the melody to do all the work for them. Can you even sing yourself? That's probably why :bibliahh:mad her vocal register is serving Mariah huh?

Bruh... look at Genius or SOMETHING I don't have the time to sit around and explain to you how music structure works. And that's what I meant by dense sound design. It's purposefully lush, to treat your ears to a nice spa vacation. Head to the lake

It's still incredibly insensitive, what if she saw that? What if your mother saw that comment? What if your mother saw a comment someone made about your own mother dying (in heaven obviously, which Laura believes in because she is a devout Christian) where they said they don't care about her death? That's basically what you're saying. You're such a weirdo for this fr :skull: you could at least have some respect for her critically acclaimed craft.

AND GOOD LUCK WITH THAT, Imma beat your ass in this round AND this competition. Maybe you can win the ATRL Razzies if you don't keep mixing up quality music for trite ****, but I don't see that happening!

Sir I don't have the time to reply to these essays. It's a **** song point blank and I ranked it appropriately. Mariah vocal range? Hardly, she has to scream to hit the B in Safe Passage. I'd be surprised if she had even two octaves, like.... You must be so pressed because your song is serving OUT. But that's okay, the comeback round happened already but there's always next season for the likes of you.
