Unrest in Sweden over Quran burnings

There has been a third night of unrest in Sweden after protests against a far-right group which burned a copy of the Quran and planned to do so again.

Violence broke out in the city of Malmö late on Saturday after a gathering of the Stram Kurs, or Hard Line, movement led by the extremist Rasmus Paludan.

Vehicles were set on fire, and some protesters threw stones at the police.

At least 16 police officers are reported to have been injured and several police vehicles destroyed in unrest that followed the far-right group's rallies, including in the suburbs of Stockholm and in the towns of Linköping and Norrköping.

Sweden's national police chief Anders Thornberg said demonstrators had shown an indifference to the lives of police officers, adding: "We have seen violent riots before. But this is something else."

Iraq's foreign ministry summoned the Swedish charge d'affaires in Baghdad on Sunday and warned the affair could have "serious repercussions" for relations between Sweden and Muslim communities in general.

Not during Ramadan :rip:

I don’t understand what they hope to achieve. They claim to want immigrants to integrate but then do things like this that will only further isolate them. On second thought though, people doing this probably don’t want them to integrate at all and just be deported at best.

When will either sides ever learn?

Stop provoking Muslims by burning religious books.

As for the “unrest”, terrorism is still a crime.

Who cares if they’re burning books. It’s a book.

They choose the holly month of Ramadan to provoke Muslims, you can see it with this situation, attacking Palestinians in the Aqsa mosque, campaigns to prevent the hijab, and China’s camps.

They still expect no retaliation or a fight back.

Is anyone surprised? :coffee2:

Can we not pretend like rioting and burning vehicles is a legitimate response to what was done? If anything it’s counterproductive. Both cases of the two sides of the same extremist coin.

Did I say the reaction is right? Never condoned it.

But the fact will always remain, every action has a reaction. And Islam is not a monolith where we share a hive mind, so if they choose to riot this way it’s their choice, same way the far right chose to show their phobia.

How is it islamaphobia? We're criticizing a religion which is a choice for most people.

If we criticize Christianity would you say that I'm Christianiphobic? No because you'd be joining in

What in the r/askgaybros sub reddit is going on in here :skull:

One group burned a book

The other burned cars and attacked the police

It's disrespectful behaviour to burn the Quran obviously. Even though I personally don't care about any holy book or religion.

But this extremely violent behaviour is disgusting and way out of line. Nothing can justify this violent behaviour.

can the extremists leave us normal people alone :rip:

They're usually against religion (as they should be) :clap3:

I mean it's the whole or Reddit tbh

Its just a book so the response from Muslims is ridiculous but it also doesn't achieve anything but upset ppl. This kind of protest statement doest make sense.

Dumb move. This will only help right wing in their cause.

I get that it's obviously disrespectful to burn the Quran during Ramadan but why isn't this behavior condemned entirely? Violent rioting seems entirely counterproductive to achieve a resolution to the issue at hand, unless all they want to achieve is to voice their discontent violently.

Spoiler

Also, if some radical Islamic group burned the Bible and Christians started burning cars and attacking cops we would be having a very different conversation :deadbanana4:

Why don't you go that subreddit and see for yourself. You shouldn't be surprised though

Why wouldn't gay ppl be weary of religion though? Why is that surprising?
