1989 Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 Taylor in a league of her own? Not surprised. An absolute legend.
Assassin Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 Of course Adele's 21 is at the top. None of the other girlies will ever be able to dethrone her

The Singing Nun was a Belgian singer/songwriter who was a member of the Dominic Order in Belgium. In 1963 she put out her debut album, The Singing Nun, which became a massive hit everywhere. The album's lead single topped the Billboard Hot 100, and the album itself spent 10 weeks at number one. Her success did not benefit her very much though, as 95% of her royalties went to her label. Of the 5% that didn't go to it, most went to her convent. Her subsequent albums failed to do as well, and eventually, in 1966, she was forced to leave the convent, as the superiors called her a bad influence on the other nuns because she disagreed with a lot of their teachings (i.e. their views on contraception). She continued to leave a chaste, religious lifestyle but after she leaving the convent she was forced to drop her stage names by her label and consequently lost her main ways of promoting her music. Her tour in 1968 was cancelled because of a song she wrote criticizing the Catholic Church, and her career suffered immensely. She started teaching disabled youths and autistic children, but years of being Sister Smile had taken a toll on her mentally, as she was never allowed to appear depressed and unhappy, and consequently she suffered a nervous breakdown and underwent years of psychotherapy. In the mid-60s she developed a friendship with Annie Pecher, a young woman she attended a university with, and it eventually blossomed into a lifelong romantic relationship. She saw a brief revival in popularity in the 70s after being asked to write more songs for the Catholic Charismatic Revival movement, and she played several big concerts after it. In the late 70s, she was told she had to pay over $63,000 in taxes to the Belgium Ministry of Finance, even though most of her income had been taken by the label and the convent. She tried to seek help from her old convent and label, the former gave her some money, but the latter completely ignored her. The school she had started for autistic children was forced to shut down because of this. After two decades of financial and mental problems, she and Annie Pecher both committed suicide in 1985.

Damn, that’s both fascinating and extremely sad. Seems like a lil bit of chart history that’s pretty unknown, thanks for sharing
