On Wednesday morning (13 April), Irish police arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the Sligo murders. According to the Irish Examiner, detectives believe he may have been planning to target more gay men.

Yes, I also always see weird conspiracy theories floating around about gay person on social media as well. There’s definitely been a rise in hatred for gay people the past 2 years or so.

Yup... IT seemed like for a while that it was becoming okay to be gay but now everyone hates us... I don't understand what changed.

Sadly there's a reason why crimes like these are on the rise in Western Europe. RIP to the victims.

I mean, this is disgusting as it is but his body being described as severely mutilated is just sickening to me. To do something like that to another person you literally have to leave all of your humanity behind. I’m not for the death sentence but a person like this really has no place in humanity.

Despite its Catholic history, Ireland is surprisingly super tolerant towards the LGBT community. These murders are horrifying

Right wing populism has been surging in Europe and minorities are the ones paying the price.

You should just be outright and own that you're suggesting that the man's religion or ethnicity is why this happened, tbh.

It would then at least open the door to the fact that he came to Ireland when he was *checks notes* 4-years-old and that the innuendo you're trying to imply wouldn't have actually change anything.

That's interesting, according to your first sentence you believe that I think his religion or ethnicity had something to do with it. But then your second sentence "rules out" the possibility that those could've been factors, since the murderer moved countries when he was 4 years old. So are we to believe that moving countries when you are young changes your ethnicity? Did you mean to talk about his nationality? Otherwise I'm not really sure what you're getting at here.

In terms of religion, we don't know the murderer's religion, so I actually didn't consider at all in this case. But religion is (almost) always cultural and/or a freely chosen belief system, so what relevance does it have what he did at 4 years old? Could a Tibetan immigrant who comes to the USA at 4 years and becomes a hardcore Evangelican and commits a hate crime against LGBTQ people not have done it because of his religion?
