This sounds very American.

If it’s socially acceptable to lighten your skin, why is it so unacceptable to darken it? :giraffe:

The show darkened the actress who is playing a domestic worker. It's promoting the association that dark skin = poor people

Ffs, this is why the West is losing.

This isn't an issue on Hong Kong or China :ace:

HK learns from Amurica me think

Why is the show called like this?

1)we should look at this with a more open mind because HK does not have the same history as the US which makes black/brown face so offensive.

2) that said, at some point there should be a conversation about pervasive racism/ethic prejudice in Eastern Asia.

What the hell is that series title???

HK doesn’t have the same history as US or UK so it doesn’t feel right to equate this to blackface in those countries but discrimination against South East Asians particularly Filipinos is very common. Still it feels like a conversation that should happen with Filipino’s in the centre rather than western media attacking Chinese language media (let’s not forget some translations can also be open for interpretation).

Also the Chinese title of that show is completely different from the English title so idk why they called it that :deadbanana:

"brownface" isn't a thing lmao we speak of blackface because there's a history behind it throughout the world, which isn't the case with "brownface" we can't even speak of such thing as the 'brown race' to begin with, only wokes and a very select number of 18th century race scientists speak of a brown race (the latter included southern europeans as part of it) :cm:

What does classism have to do with this? The Chinese actress is playing a Filipina. Filipinos tend to be darker than Chinese people.

The domestic worker character is Filipina. Filipinos, on average, are significantly darker-skinned than Chinese.

Agreed.

Uh... brownface is definitely a thing. White Hollywood actors have darkened their skin to play brown-skinned non-white characters as early as the 1930s in old Hollywood.

And no, blackface doesn't have "a history behind it throughout the world." It originated in the west and it's mainly a western phenomenon.

and as usual "holier than thou" americans are pushing their morals onto other countries and cultures. STOP interjecting yourself onto other peoples business!

Tanning your skin to play a character that lives in sunny areas where the locals have tans and lose them the minute it's no longer sunny/they no longer live in such areas will never be paralleled to Blackface to me, sorry :cm: and I will NEVER deem middle easterners and the like as nothing short of white, I've lived there and know what I'm talking about :lakitu: Blackface is mainly a western phenomenon? Go tell that to the Black people living in Egypt and throughout the MENA who have to witness it TO THIS DAY on daytime TV (and not as in we're white/light skinned playing a Black character but as in RACIAL MOCKERY comedy bits). You can carry on this conversation on your own tho cuz you're clearly one of those US/western-centric wokes who peddle the POC discourse while having no clue about the history and experience of Black folks in the lands of those who pretend to be your friends and allies in the US to gain platforms and political influence over your backs (I won't break to you the origins of the race-based Transatlantic slave trade and through which regions it reached europe before reaching america, cuz that would be too much for you, so let's just say f*ck history for now)  :)

I wonder whether you would be singing the same song had it been a european tv show though, a lot of you would take no issue with 'americans pushing their morals onto other countries and cultures' then :gaycat3:
