Honestly, Fair should have dropped with a video. Her team shouldn’t be playing around like this.

Treat Me by Chloe Bailey charted off the strength of having a good video.

We Go Up by Nicki Minaj is moving up fast on Apple Music because the video revived interest in the song.

Both of those are non-singles with minimal push. Visuals just help sell the song in this day and age (and it’s been that way for years now).

It’s hard to get away with just a song drop unless you’re going tiktok viral like SZA (I Hate U) or Jack Harlow (First Class), I guess. If they weren’t going to support Fair, why send it to radio? Waste of time.  :deadbanana4:

This seems like a very superficial rubric for "success".

Is Treat Me predicted to chart this week? Last I checked Treat Me was out of the top 200 across all major platforms in less than 7 days. It's not a hit, which is what Normani needs at this point.

If Normani's song entered the chart in the 80s and then fell out after one week she would be dragged by the same people dragging her now aka mostly Nicki fans bitter in the wake of Wild Side.

Normani and Megan Thee Stallion did a song with a video and TTH and it also bubbled under so really that's not always a winning formula if the song is not exciting...

This clearly isn't something RCA was looking to blow up immediately if at all. Delayed radio impact to a small(er) format, no official video, no TTH.

Fair is not a very catchy song with or without a video.

An aside:

Not sure why some act like Normani is at fault as an artist if her material like Fair is not widely known, when really it's how her material is being promoted by her label. The same can be said for the treatment of Waves and the Calvin Harris EP. Weak or no radio push, late or no video, few or no national performances, weak playlisting.

I was wondering how some of SZA's music which is similarly mellow did so well on platforms like Spotify and then I got my answer. For example, Good Days was at number three on New Music Friday and research has shown that songs at the very top of NMF receive the most streaming increase. Notice the drop off even from  1 to 3 or 3 to 4.

FQ-gTvHVgAAbVwo?format=png&name=small

From the top 3 of NMF it started dropping down the chart from its 71 global debut tp almost 100 before the end of week 1. On the 5th day it was added to TTH where it jumped from the 90s to the 50s to the 40s globally. I'm sure a similar playlisting pattern exists for her recent material.

Success is in the hand of the platforms working with the labels. I'm not trying to discredit SZA, but if Normani's label wanted her to have a better chance at a hit, they have the knowledge on how to do that. See: Motivation, Good Days, Doja's material, etc.

I'm so afraid of being let down right now, but I'll just have faith they have this and May is about to be THE month for the album launch. Fair MV, new single MV, performances, MET Gala, BBMAs. They need to make this right. :jonny5:

This new single better be WS 2.0 for the summer.

If it wasn't for her giant ego and laziness, I'd say Normani is getting Tinashe'd. At least Tinashe would still release a few singles under RCA every now and then lol

I think my frustration lies in lack of communication and that leads to everything seeming disorganized and messy. Why is the video being released over a month out of the single? Why are there no more performances? What the hell happened to "instrumental version" "album version" that she promoted of the song? This album seems to have the same timeline as Planet Her but this **** is so disorganized. I understand her team can't control RCA but they could give her a damn social media manager or start teasing ****

Wheresjay said even before this song was released that RCA didn't want to pump money into this song and Normani herself has been teasing the uptempo since Fair was released. Some of you need to save the thinkpieces.

I will say though that this video should have been released if it's filmed. Unless they are saving it for the album release week. Wouldn't be a bad idea.

This right here is so Mani it’s comical :dies:

Over a month since it’s been released, they really accomplished nothing with this

I’m gonna assume the release was a test lol.

The stupid thing about saying that Normani/her team never meant to invest in this one or promote it…then what the hell was the point? She’s a commercial artist trying to have a successful commercial music career.

Before artists use to release music because it meant something to them. She got out of a 2 year relationship with a guy that broke her heart and it was important for her to release it. I mean she has said that in multiple interviews

Do I personally think it was a good idea after Wild Side? NO. But I also know there was some background stuff with her moving from keep cool to regular RCA. I understand why people are mad though. To me this should have been released in January

Some of us have been trying to say this for weeks in here and get a very weird amount of pushback :deadbanana4: If this were TRULY being treated as an album promotion track (i.e. the album was actually announced and a proper single followed it a few weeks later), then I would understand the purpose of releasing it - the song seems to mean a lot to her and it's a good way to show people there's a more vulnerable side to her music.

But it's completely indefensible for this to be the only song she has out for six weeks and counting with no album announcement and no follow-up single announcement. Not to mention a music video that apparently exists but isn't being released for... reasons. I don't get why it's such a controversy in this fandom that her team makes baffling and illogical decisions. It's provable fact at this point.

This thread is grueling. Go outside y’all. :rip:

Lmaooooooo. Well, I’ve already completely moved on from this song so I haven’t felt enraged by the lack of action recently.

I just hope that the silence means that Normani/RCA are scrambling their plans around to scrap Fair/push the uptempo as soon as possible.

Yeah bizarre. I’m sure she’ll come through with the uptempo banger and people will be eating it up, but why waste this time? I can’t even imagine when or even if we’ll get her second album at this rate

Not doing anything at Urban where it’s supposedly becoming a “slow burning hit” either

I will say this: I think it’s a lot smarter nowadays to push a track like this before the album than after. The noise it made was definitely more than what we would get from a downtempo R&B ballad as single 3 or 4 in the streaming era. The risk is lower on promoting something like this now compared to later.

Nnn Normani really has no shame. She’ll be quiet for a month and pop out like it’s nothing. Girl where is the video?

Not people arguing in here again.

Just let Fair do what it’s going to do. This is why a base thread is important. People should be allowed to enjoy Fair and whatever rollout is going on (even if it’s a mess).

Everyone else who wants to be mad should just focus on the next single in another place. May is the month, just give it a week or so before the “she’s doomed! Album is doomed!” rants.

Things will pick up so soon to now, we already did most of the waiting. Don’t take your anger out on Fair and other users in the meanwhile.  :deadbanana4:
