From BBC's live blog...

Now that Liz Truss has resigned, Labour, the SNP and the Lib Dem are all calling for an immediate general election - but could there be one?

The next election isn't due until January 2025 - this is five years from the day the current Parliament first met, plus election campaign time.

Any decision to hold an earlier election usually rests with the prime minister.

Alternatively, a motion of no confidence in the prime minister in the House of Commons could force a general election.

To pass, the motion would just need one more MP voting in favour than against. If the government lost the vote, a general election would normally be called

However, for a no confidence motion to pass, Conservative MPs would need to vote down their own government, which many would be very unlikely to do.

Obviously, Tory MPs won't vote for that no confidence motion because there's a good chance that they will lose, unless they are in a super safe seat. Maybe there will be defections?

If not, then we may have another 3 to 6 more PMs before it's time for new elections.

Truss was a 'disgrace' - Russian spokeswoman

Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has welcomed the departure of Liz Truss as prime minister, saying that "Britain has never known such a disgrace of a prime minister," and that Truss "would be remembered for her catastrophic illiteracy".

Zakharova was likely referring to a comment Truss made when she was the foreign secretary, in which she appeared to confuse two regions of Russia with Ukraine.

Biden thanks Truss for 'partnership'

US President Joe Biden has put out a statement on the PM's resignation. It reads:

"The US and the UK are strong allies and enduring friends - and that fact will never change. I thank Prime Minister Liz Truss for her partnership on a range of issues including holding Russia accountable for its war against Ukraine.

"We will continue our close cooperation with the UK government as we work together to meet the global challenges our nations face."

From The Guardian's live blog

_____

Some gallows humour from Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister. It appears that Liz Truss’s resignation will set another unwanted record, by making her the first prime minister in recent history not to call the UK’s devolved leaders at any point while in office.

Under a modern convention, one of the first acts of a new prime minister is to make a courtesy call to the first ministers of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It emerged earlier this month that Truss had failed to uphold that tradition by omitting to call Sturgeon or Mark Drakeford, the Welsh first minister, despite being in office for a month. Sturgeon called Truss’s failure to call “absurd”.

After Truss’s enforced resignation, the BBC Scotland political reporter Phillip Sims tweeted: “Is Liz Truss set to leave office without ever having a formal meeting or even phone call with Nicola Sturgeon?”

Sturgeon replied, with an eye-wink emoji: “If she doesn’t mind, I’ll now just wait for whoever will become the 5th PM (so far) during my time as FM.”

How are we supposed to deal with this for over two years more of Tory ineptitude :psyduck:

The fact they're going to re-elect Boris, completely forgetting he was also losing in a landslide to Labour and was deeply unpopular. :deadbanana:

Like, yes, he was keeping the Tories in triple seat figures, but that shouldn't be an achievement.

Wow, UK in full-on meltdown mode, dominating international headlines for weeks, for once. :rip: This feels bigger than Brexit, idk.

I feel like this is an omen internationally. The next two-three years are going to be a complete **** show globally.

So the next leadership candidates have to get 100 MPs to nominate them by Monday, but is there even a single candidate that 100 Tories can agree on when the party is so divided? :rip:

These were the results of the first ballot of the last leadership contest and no-one got 100 votes from MPs, although Rishi was close:

Rishi Sunak - 88

Penny Mordaunt - 67

Liz Truss - 50

Kemi Badenoch - 40

Tom Tugendhat - 37

Anti-tofu and anti-human-rights activist - 32

Nadhim Zahawi - 25

Jeremy Hunt - 18
