Snigur d. Halep 6-2 0-6 6-4

The US Open is such a cursed slam for Haley ddd. Definitely the biggest upset on both the men’s and women’s side so far though. Especially considering how well Simona played in Toronto.

Halep going out is actually a huge boon for Serena if she can take advantage of it.

I don't think I have ever seen an atmosphere like that at any tennis match, I had chills. I'm glad Serena got the win, and she definitely looked much better here than at Cinci.

Serena looked solid after the nerves wore off and her serve started clicking. I think the biggest thing she needs to work on is really attacking second serves. She started to hit some aggressive returns towards the end of the match, but she’ll need to do that more consistently against Kontaveit.

Overall, though, I think her level was at least on par as when she reached the finals in 2018 and 2019.

I do feel bad that she’s being forced to do all this celebratory/goodbye stuff. It’s to be expected, but you can tell she’s not into it.

I got last minute tickets for Wednesday night (I arrive in NYC tomorrow) since prices were already going crazy.  Excited to be there even tho it'll be tough against Anett.

Kasatkina out is also a massive shock

Crazy first day, but also somewhat expected. Both men and women fields are insanely open

Nadal coming off injury and Medvedev not playing that well

Garbine didn't flop in R1??

Honestly it’s always when you think she’s reached rock bottom that she comes out of nowhere to win a huge tournament. :rip:

Ugh Emma again with blisters all over her right hand.

Pretty entertaining first set. Cornet with some absurd defense at times

Emma losing was probably the most predictable result of this R1

Tbh this might be good for her in the big picture, the pressure and expectations was overwhelming. Now she's free and can start over
