Rence is right  Radical Red is the gold standard for having all the modern features, & 9 gens, but the difficulty can turn some people off.

 

These are difficulty hacks (no story changes) that aren't as hard as RR:

 

Renegade Platinum 

BlazeBlack & VoltWhite 2 Redux 

The above are both limited to the dated NDS engine tho, so they only have the first 4/5 gens of Pokemon.

Inclement Emerald is built on the same modern GBA engine as RR, & has 8 gens of Pokemon.

 

Unbound is where Radical Red got its engine from, it's a completely original region, characters, & story, with the first 8 gens of Pokemon.

Here's a list of locations and Pokémon changes for Radical Red.

 

Just made it past Misty on Radical Red and whew this game is HARD I got a Glimmet from the Wonder Egg and it's such a lifesaver
