2024 US Election Megathread πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ›οΈ

Message added by Lee!!,

It was decided based on feedback from the spring 2023 town hall to transition this thread back to being election specific. With the Civics section being able to house specific threads on many issues, we think having a generalized politics thread is not completely necessarily anymore.Β
Β

With that said, please continue to be respectful and remember that you do not always need to respond to everyone.Β

Unfortunately the right wing media ecosystem (pathological liars) and leftists (mostly operating out of high cost of living blue cities) are obsessed with the economy being bad under a Democratic President.Β
Β

Whenever Democrats try to message that the economy is doing well, those two factions throw all of their political weight behind breaking the feedback loop that would lead to voters absorbing the message. Β

I'm gonna need the MMT (modern monetary theory) girlies to come to the mic.

Β

Β

Like many others, I bought into the leftist idea that the deficit didn't matter and some inflation would be a worthwhile trade off for higher wages… and now it'sΒ leftistsΒ who are abandoning us with the fallout of their ideas.Β This is why we don't give them anything.

Β

If Trump wins, guarantee we will never see a $4 trillion (with a T!) infusion into the economy, mostly thanks to Pelosi :heart2:, aimed at keeping average Americans afloat during a would-be recession.

Β

With fickle political allies like this, who needs enemies? Β :ace:

The defeat of a liberal Portland prosecutor at the hands of a tough-on-crime challenger has hardened a view among top White House officials that Democrats need to further distance themselves from their left flank on law-and-order issues.

Β

In the wake of the voter backlash over public safety in Oregon, Joe Biden's aides this week argued the results served as validation of their long-running concerns that crime and an immigration crisis at the southern border risk overwhelming the president's case for reelection β€” especially if the broader party is seen as soft on both fronts.

Β

"Particularly right now, Americans don't want to feel like things are out of control," said one Biden official, who was granted anonymity to offer candid views about tensions within the party. "Well-meaning ideas have gone too far, and we need a sensible approach."

Β

The White House is banking on the idea that voters will reward them for public efforts to crack down on immigration and boost spending on law enforcement β€” and, perhaps as importantly, that the liberal forces that so effectively moved the party away from those planks in 2020 won't punish the president come November.

Β

Inside the West Wing, senior counselor Steve Ricchetti has been among the leading voices making this case, while also advocating for more toughness on the border, according to the Biden official and one other, both granted anonymity to discuss private conversations.

Β

In recent months, Biden has warned advisers that scenes of chaos at the border or crime in cities pose an increasing political danger. They risk turning off the independent and suburban voters, he's said, who may be repulsed by much of Donald Trump's policies and personality but could be willing to vote for him anyway in the name of public safety.

Β

The emphasis has angered some Democrats, including lawmakers who believe that the president's approach on immigration will establish a border-enforcement-only posture as the starting ground for any type of legislative compromise. Black lawmakersΒ have similarly warnedΒ that Biden's tough-on-crime rhetoric risks harming people of color. It has not gone unnoticed by progressives that much of the sharpening of Biden's rhetoric has taken place after they lost a powerful ally in the West Wing when former chief of staff Ron Klain departed.

Β

But Biden and his senior-most aides are united on the need to push for greater border security. And elsewhere in the party, the tack to the middle has been welcomed. And the ouster in Portland's Multnomah County of district attorney Mike Schmidt, one of a wave of progressive reformers swept into office following the 2020 murder of George Floyd, is proof itself of where the political winds are pointed.

Β

"We just always have to be focused on quality of life issues," said Rep.Β Susie LeeΒ (D-Nev.). "And if people don't feel safe in their community, we'd better respond to that."

I think this view from the White House is such a wrong take of what's locally going on in Oregon. The fact that they legalized every drug and reduced enforcement penalties drove this win, not that there's an overall "tough on crime" desire from the Democratic electorate.

Β

if you say you're tired of petty theft in stores in city centers, want to increase the penalties on catalytic converter thefts, and ensure that prosecutors are doing their jobs to enforce the laws on the books, that's all that needs to be communicated.

Β

idk, it's not like as Oregon goes, so goes the country. Oregon just went a little too hard on racial justice being tied to drug usage and they're learning it was the wrong tactic

Voting Democrat now won't do anything about this. The court is locked in and will remain what it is for the better part of a decade, so long as Sotomayor doesn't die from her diabetes before then. Republican judges retiring strategically while Democrat justices have more selfish interests with regard to their own personal legacies is why we are here today.

Β

The time to vote Democrat was eight years ago when Hillary Clinton ran the worst campaign imaginable as the worst candidate imaginable. The time to be strategic about the court was ten years ago, when RBG refused to retire even with all the health problems she faced. Now it looks like Joe Biden and Sotomayor are looking to repeat history

Β

Thats not to say that you shouldn't vote for Democrats. I'm just telling you that the court is going to strike down what it wants regardless of political outcomes.
