This didn't used to be the case when groups sang live, but there is only so much you can do to make a lip-synced performance interesting. Unless the choreography itself is amazing or the stage presence is exceptionally good, it's always going to feel stale and lifeless 

For me, wanting live vocals isn't some moral thing against lip syncing. It's just about making the performances better & more engaging.

I totally agree. I don't hate lipsyncing, loud backtracks, prerecorded vocals or anything of the sort but you have to be a really good performer to pull it off. When a singer SINGS, even if they're not very good at it, at least it shows you that they're there.

But tbh the performers are today are actually amazing. I feel like they're all aware of how harshly they're judged and so companies are spending more time in training. The result is clear, especially with groups like Itzy. But LSS, IVE, and Nmixx are all really talented as well.

 

If you mean bring back COLOUR on stage then we also have that, too, but not to the extent that we did with fx or especially Orange Caramel. In any case, SM have their own fx of today: Red Velvet, in that they treat them just as terribly

The new pop girls can't perform for s***, like Doja is the only one that can be called a performer.

Gidle is there for 4th gen. Sure they might not sing live all the time but they still do it more than the other 4th gen girlies. Plus their vocal styles are distinct for each member, have beautiful vocal tones, they’re not as robotic on stage and they go beyond just the “choreography” aspect with interesting concepts and visuals for every award show performance. 
 

also we need to understand as kpop stans that performance-based girlgroups exist and are equally valid as the vocal-focused ggs. You don’t always see the performance-beasts like Itzy and LSRFM in this generation, and if you say you’re not entertained by their slayage on stage…..then you’re either lying or you simply have a different subjective taste. I, personally, appreciate their talent 100%.

still, with these album sales even if they were to have a Be Natural-sized bomb of a single they would still show the company they have DEMAND thanks to the fanbase

They had some dance stages at SMTown but I don't think SM has showcased enough well-rounded idols to make a strong group lineup. They're in the same spot aespa was in until Giselle joined SM. just like aespa though they could be forced out before they're actually ready at any minute 

 

I also think the current SMrookies might just be the NCT Japan lineup

 

NCT Hollywood was a pet project of Lee Sooman(along with most of NCT's weird structure being his fault) so I wouldn't be shocked to see that completely cancelled or shat out onto streaming services along with a single song before being abandoned at this point.

 

As for Japan, SM's recent releases there have been performing abysmal (similar sales to the unpromoted Korean releases from the same acts). I think shittizens are currently expecting news about them before the new year though. It would be weird if they let somebody as talented as Shotaro fall through the cracks but they already did exactly that to Henry so who knows.

 

I think we're entering a weird patch for SM and new debuts.

After watching all the mma performances from the other night, it is clear 4th gen is the generation of untalented singers and weak dancers who can’t even properly lip sync … never come for the 3rd gen legends again.

It's boring when even special performances are lipsync. I can give the music shows a pass since there's tons of them (even tho older groups did use to perform live).

I wonder when or if there can be a new dominant boy group post-BTS.

 

BTS kind of ruined the idea of a Top Boy Group.

 

Because there are tons of huge boygroups right now. Stray Kids, Seventeen, NCT, etc. But unless any of them can match or exceed what BTS achieved, there won't be any one of them that can say they're the top.

 

Like they will just be really big groups but they'll never be considered 'the top boy group' the way Big Bang, EXO and BTS were, or HOT etc. before them. Idk

Who cares about live singing in K-Pop… for real. Is this genre not centered around choreography and performance? I don’t want to see groups half ass choreo for some weak breathy vocals anyways. Unless it’s an acoustic set I don’t care.
