I'd like to see them speaking up. I think the only thing related I saw was ATEEZ members donating to the victims' families...

Maybe they are guided by their agencies to not any anything and avoiding controversies? I'm not sure.

ATEEZ and Dreamcatcher were on tour and couldn't cancel or postponed so they got sworn at by KR Twitter.

It’s just a different culture where idols are discouraged to speak up to avoid any misconstruing of their words, especially because these tragedies are highly politicized in that country, whether it be the Sewol Ferry tragedy or the Itaewon one. They might be doing their parts behind the scenes or privately, but they won’t be saying much publicly.

Hello, long time lurker here :bird:

I’m having a trip to Korea and just want to update you guys of the things that I’ve noticed in the last few days:

- NewJeans is everywhere. Their music is played everywhere I go. A lot of ads on buses and trains. Teens in the park doing covers of Hype Boy and Attention. No wonder why they are at the top right now (plus good music of course).
- IVE also has a huge presence here. Their music is quite popular I think. A lot of Won Young ads on the street. No group banner promo though.
- SM artists are also everywhere. Huge banners for NCT. I didn’t see any banner for aespa, but their musics are played a lot (with Black Mamba being the most played). There are goods with SM artists at the convenience stores. I think it’s a good way to promote their artists. I only found Super Junior and NCT goods though.
- YG and JYP artists are nowhere to be found :rip: But at least I heard Shut Down being played at some stores and some Jennie CK ads. I’ve been here 3 days and haven’t seen any ad or music from JYP artists (minus Dice being played at a restaurant :clown:).  This is likely the reason why JYP and some YG artists are not popular in South Korea I guess.

I think the way the labels promoting their artists will help to increase their popularity in South Korea, which YG and JYP seem to completely fail to me :priceless:

this was such a great read thanks so much! Please keep us updated on what you observe!

question- how strong is IU cultural dominance overall and especially in terms of songs and CFs etc? Also any  2nd gen It girls like Suzy or Yoona, what’s their presence like? is k-Rnb really the most popular genre?

The fact that the same journalist that keep bringing IVE in a good light was the same one trashing Monsta X when they were negociating their contracts... I'm not mad that I.M left this agency.

The tragedy has become highly politicized in Korea, so it's probably why idols are steering clear of saying anything directly.

Plus, there's a high risk netizens would accuse them of using this tragedy for publicity, which would create a really huge scandal.

Thank you for the infos, guys. I've noticed they really avoid to be involved with their country's politics publicly. Iirc, they weren't even posting photos wearing/highlighting some colours to not being associated to any political party during elections.

To some the national period of mourning with everything fun shutdown was starting to feel like a new round of covid restrictions and people were like not this again.  And a dead body is supposed to be in the ground/out of the crematory in at most 3 days, so why is this taking 7 days?  And why are people celebrating Halloween?  And what kind of people are going to Itewon to hang out with druggie foreigners?  And those Itewon district officials that allowed the situation to become this dangerous, what's their party affiliation?  We can't have that party in our district!

Nevermind.

The chances are way too low for them being able to recreate their magnum

opus. One can only dream. :monkey:

At least nobody swore at Hi-L for continuing their activities in Japan.

Not necessarily speak up about the situation in detail.
But at least, I expected them to have a small message for the victims… It’s just so unusual to me.

Hmmm what can they say? "Please don't go out and gather anymore"?

GD made a statement and got dragged for it. So it's good that the idols are staying out of it

wdym what can they say? Idk something like RIP to the victims.

Really?? To the point that they can’t even send a RIP?

So Everything is really controlled in SK. The fact that they can’t even send a small  condolence message…

I'm the only one who find it so shocking that all these idols came back to bubble/others sns as if nothing had happened in their OWN country. They all disappeared following the mourning period (which is understandable) but as soon it was over, they're back doing their usual fan services without any words for the victims of itaewon..

It can’t be a cultural things right? So what’s the reason? Do they not care?

Taeyeon sent her condolences

I also saw Jessi and KARD members posting on their Instagram stories.

Imagine Aespa with a song like this like don’t tell me u can’t see the vision

no cause that would be such a serve

I really hope they will continue going into the hyperpop-ish experimental direction they had with Savage instead of Girls' basic EDM girlcrush

Girls is a good song too but in comparison with SOTYavage it's just.. bland and lifeless idk

See now that’s a normal reaction as a public figure.

But some idols didn’t say anything, disappeared and came back yesterday, not even one minute after the mourning period was over and just acted like nothing happened talking about weather and food…

I found it really insensitive

Omg Charli XCS is stanning Lee Know, it’s always Lee Know being in those random situations :dies: Her taste though :clap3:

——

Since we are on the topic of Lee Know, let’s appreciate his thick body especially his defined muscle thighs :msmarvel:

He knew exactly what he was doing  :dies:

———

The way Leè Knowles also has the top 2 most viewed bg fancams released this year if we exclude V and Jungkook :clap3:

He's coming for Hyunjin and Felix's wig's as the most popular member I fear :gaycat7:

companies share their condolonces/statements regarding the tragedy on behalf of the idols/groups themselves

it’s a bit weird now that i think about it but after all it’s k-pop where pretty much everything is controlled :michael:

When a big tragedy happen in your country, as a public figure acting like nothing happened is very weird to me.

Idk I can’t see this happening in my country that’s why I asked if it is a cultural things?

I mean Dua lipa was still posting thirst traps the day the queen died. It sounds harsh but a week of silence is more than enough.:doc: An idol would barely get a week off even if a family member died.

Wait I am curious about Mamafad, any idea?

I didn’t see anything related to Mamamoo. Maybe because the places I visited were playing hot new music (I guess).

Thank you! IU is truly the national little sister here. I saw a lot of her ads in the subway, shopping streets, etc. Her music is also popular. People seem to love Strawberry Moon as I heard it everyday since I got here.

I also saw some Yoona cosmetic ads, and there were some goods in the convenience stores (along with Tae Yeon). Some Suzy ads too (not as much as Yoona though).

I only listen to some artists like 10cm (if they’re counted as RnB artist), but I heard their songs and other songs with similar vibes being played regularly. So I guess RnB is popular here.
