I think with aespa, Next Level was just the right song at the right time, and I'm so happy for them that they snatched that so early on because it has supercharged their career.

It is true, RV didn't get that same level of smash until they were 3 years in, but then SM's management of RV had been very shaky/messy until Red Flavor came along. OOTN literally killed their momentum and set them back massively.

They seem much more sure of what they're doing with aespa, which is good. Girls is more of a moderate hit, but the huge sales and GP interest have not changed (see 5 songs charting at the same time on Melon). So aespa is in a great place at the front of the pack :clap3:

Imagine if they debuted with Red Flavor, they could be at the same level as Blackpink or Twice :jonnycat:

OTTN was a risky single, just like ZZB, RBB and UU, songs that really killed their momentum. OTTN was SM's idea of making them huge in korea, aren't the lyrics based on regional tale or something:toofunny2: they really tried, the song had great promo and choreo to caught the eye, it's just that it didn't click at all, however they are like the only girl group who have released a full on ballad as a title track since forever. They should have gone the Double title track route for that release and tbh "The Velvet" mini is really weak, it could have used better songs tbh.  A girls kinda fluke album wise.

Not really, their popular tracks  WW are psycho and BB, and tbh it wasn't meant for them, BP has western appeal (to some extent because no average USA citizen is blasting the atrocity that is HYLT) And TWICE had asia, specially Japan. RV only had korea and on a lower scale than Twice and even Gfriend for some time. SM messed up with Japan and their only relevant international promo was the North korean concert:hoetenks:

2021-2022 is definitely the most idol friendly the market has been in many years, there have been so many gg hits this year. The latter years of 3rd gen were a wasteland compared to now :deadbanana:

--

In other news I've been horrified to discover that Dance the Night Away is Twice's biggest hit in terms of the #s, and one of the biggest idol hits of all time. The absolute LACK of taste :deadbanana:

Snsd will probably go with something like i got a boy or next level,  i think thats the reason why aespa went with more mainstream structure not changing tempo here and there this time aroubd because snsd will probably release something similar to NL/IGAB music wise.

That's what I'm saying they're definitely gonna be given some aespa reject. The meltdowns will be fun to witness  :lakitu: Like I said just look at SHINee Don't Call Me was more similar to an NCT song than any of their early stuff. It's kinda clear SM wants to start moving away from the "GP-friendly" material for most of their acts to more experimental & cutting-edge stuff.

They can disband if they are going the experimental route, I need a Lil Touch kinda serve and nothing less.

Maybe...who knows. I think things happened at the right time, because RV didn't peak too soon (unlike GFriend who were big at the start then quickly faded to nothing). I think the later smash in 2017 kinda saved RV from a similar fate.

OOTN was the worst decision in their career. I have nothing against the music or The Velvet album, it's beautiful and serving art and talent. But it was WRONG for SM to do that kind of release so early in their career. That's something you do after you are established and can afford a flop or two.

Joy said at the time she cried for days when SM told them it was gonna be their comeback. She didn't want it.

Even backstage after OOTN 1st music show win, she was breaking down in tears because she didn't think they were gonna win any award for that song.

Psycho felt like a huge moment for Red Velvet, not sure if it was the demo leaking that really excited everyone or if it was the return of their darker concepts

I have noticed recently SM making a real attempt to involve the fans in all of the stages of a song and it's creation. In recording videos recently (for NCT Dream atleast) they've actually played the demo songs they received, they're showing all the choreo that was submitted via dancers through that new Youtube channel and recently some video also interviewed A&R etc. who basically explained to fans what they do etc.

Not sure if the purpose is just to bring transparency into kpop but it is interesting how open they're starting to be

There was the chance of it smashing and it being bigger than any other release from them tbh, we know ballads are huge when they hit the right spot for the GP and that's what the lyrics of the song were aiming at.  At least it was a nice song, RBB and ZBB are totally inexcusable, like honestly there was no reason for those songs to exist.

They have advantages of debuted earlier,  if they manage to score big hits in korea during debut days they will be ustoppable. They have irene the visual,  seulgi the ace,  wendy the english speaker,  sm will probably put more effort in promoting overseas if they score big hit during debut era. But it took them 3 years to score their smash hit.

:rip: I'm sure they had a word with them after Glitch Mode because some of the members pulled a 180 in reaction to a song that is still terrible

Well the only RV fault was not releasing more english songs, cuz BP is just the female BTS in terms of noise music, RV debuted when BTS and DDDD had not happened yet, what i mean Psycho were miles ahead in terms of quality and the western did realize it

Watching SNSD TamTam now, I'm only 20min in and they already toasted to Ahjumma's Generation and made fun of Yuri's unknown solo. :ahh:

I'm happy for Itzy doing better tho. Imagine the success they could have with a song that isn't utterly awful :skull:

:ahh:omg, the good sisters must have been FUMING with that song. They probably endured it because they knew Psycho was coming.

It's their fault RV didn't smash early on. From the rushed debut to the horrible song Happiness to the panned MV... everything was wrong with RV and then the Be Natural release that didn't do anything on the charts and only worked as promo for Taeyong. ICC and DD were catchy enough but still very quirky their concept wasn't simple to get despite the girls being talented and beautiful and again their japanese career being so mismanaged is also a huge mistake because even when Twice flops everywhere they have japan.
