I have a theory, and I could be wrong, but my gut tells me that Normani wants to challenge people's beliefs. Many would argue that going with something uptempo is the right move because she's a performer who dances extremely well, but I think that she wants to prove that with a solid record, regardless of the tempo, it can still be considered good, and that is true. I've listened to the snippet several times, and I can see where the disconnect is coming from, but I have a feeling that once the song and visual comes, a lot of people will change their initial reaction, but that's just a thought.

Y'all, I just realized the reason for the mid-tempo preference.. maybe  it's meant to be slow-move-your-body-in-a-sexy-way feeling yourself type of music 💀

not sure you can get the same effect with uptempo…

Those songs have memorable, iconic, melodies. 1:59 is very choppy and cuts in and out. Normani loves this type of song for some reason. Wild Side & Waves are a bit choppy and empty too (it's like an alt-r&b sound?). They aren't smooth songs like a Boo'd Up and Wild Thoughts which are closer to "regular" r&b (wild thoughts is pop crossover though).

Fair was the first time she made like a truly smooth r&b song with a strong melody. The rollout was just terrible and it should have dropped with a (good) video if they seriously wanted it as a single.

What ever happened to the fair video? Brian Friedman (the choreographer of the video) said he didn't know what happened either.

Why do people keep saying Normani doesn't want to do uptempos? Did she tell y'all that?

Y'all claim to be fans but boxing her into r&b the same way the people who want pop from her are. Tsk tsk :bird:

Not understanding that either. Normani was fighting to release Candy Paint.

The Bose deal and running to get Sean Bankhead for it was def a sign she loves that track and wants it out too.

1:59 is def a warm up for the era and also, Gunna is hot right now. If nothing else, that's the main reason it's a single. They want a r&b chart hit then they'll divest into something more multi-format friendly for the next single if 1:59 doesn't naturally pick up on pop a bit too.

If pop radio can play that Drake and Sexyy Red twerk song, they can play 1:59! :bird:

Yall aren't exhausted yet?

Funny you talk about exhaustion when the only thing exhausted is JT's career. Even Kacey Musgraves was able to outchart him

Please kindly leave Normani's base and don't come in here trying to derail the thread

I mean, her choosing Midtempos makes sense given her only two hits were mid-tempos.

Motivation is like the only uptempo she has released that amassed any type of success and that was also sort of short-lived in comparison to those two tracks.

Wild Side, Waves, Fair, DWAS, Love Lies & now 1:59; All midtempos. All kind of fit her style and what she's going for, but she knows we want an uptempo & I know she will deliver it in due time.

My brother @wildsidenormani hates this but everyone should make room mentally for her to take a very Aaliyah approach. Sleek, sexy and on her own time.

This, midtempos are absolutely her lane, they suit her tone so well

She is (slowly :rip:) building her lane

Even though we might be getting a video alongside the release, I'm HOPING that the play-listing for 1:59 will be good on both Apple Music and Spotify.

If that May 17th date is true I'm curious to see what Normani's team planned for the rollout

is the single coming with a video on release day? @WheresJay

Yeah and @sam.teas also said they saw two dates pertaining to Normani. One was April 26 but wasn't sure what the date was for. So makes sense April 26 is the single and that second date (that was also mentioned to be Q2) would be mid May. Makes sense tbh

Yup! The dates are exactly the ones I saw, but, as I told you in private, I was sceptical in sharing them! :bird:

Fair, but she has to know that an uptempo is going to draw more people in.

Save the "prove it" song for a second single.

I hear you, and I think that she knows this, but I also feel that the song she's leading with is the intro to this era. This is the warm-up, as someone here said. Only time will tell if this will work out for her, but I have faith.

Those of who want uptempo Mani are most definitely going to be satisfied when the album is out. She's very well aware there's a faction of nation who'll riot if she doesn't give us those songs

Do you know if we're getting multiple singles before the album release or just 1:59?

I haven't heard about any other singles before the album release.

But I do know after the album release the plan is multiple singles. 1:59 won't be the only thing that gets a push
