LesFleur Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 (edited) The BPI for years has used an automated system, once records reach the certification thresholds they are certified - labels don't have to apply like US RIAA. BPI uses OCC chart sales. OCC published in 2021: Quote Whitney Houston’s legendary take on Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You from 1992, which spent ten weeks at the top, is at Number 6 in our rundown. The evergreen is now at 2,289,000 with 1.67 million pure sales. The BPI does include combined units (with streaming) when issuing certifications... So why is I Will Always Love You only certified 2x Platinum in 1993? UK Platinum is: 600k It should be 3x Platinum and is nearly 4x Platinum. Edited April 9, 2022 by LesFleur
Hector Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 (edited) The automatic certifications go from 1994 onwards so I Will Always Love You should hopefully get another 2x Platinum certification once it reaches 2.4M cumulative chart sales. Edited April 9, 2022 by Hector

But why isn't it 3x Platinum if they already have 2x Platinum data and combined nearly 2.3M confirmed sales?
Delirious Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 They say it's automatic but it's actually not. There's a reason why artists get so many certifications at one time.
whitneyhoustonlegend Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 I think her estate has to do something with this, to claim the certificate

I think it's mostly automatic, but sometimes labels have to send in a request with receipts or something.
Brando Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 i don't know why people care about certifications in the first place when we can just use actual numbers instead of the constant broken undercertified/overcertified nonsense
JoAddams Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 BPI has automatic update most of the time, but not always. Some Kylie & Madonna singles also still not updated / certified. Sometimes they certifie singles / albums several times separately for physical / digital / standard / deluxe releases.

Yeah I think the BPI probably sends an invoice of some sort to an artists label once their record reaches a new threshold, if the label pays for the invoice they issue the certification if not they wait.

With the automated certifications, we can get an update every Friday. Otherwise, you have to hope someone from OCC, Billboard, HDD or other industry press drip feeds some figures.
