Hector Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 Olivia Rodrigo is the biggest new pop artist of recent years. Her debut album, SOUR, was the second best-seller of 2021, hitting number one in 17 countries, while her debut single, drivers license, was the fifth biggest track of last year, reaching the top in over 20 countries. Since SOUR’s release in May 2021, it has received 16.9 billion streams to date, Olivia has been nominated for over 50 awards across the globe (including Album Of The Year at the GRAMMY Awards 2022), and things are showing no signs of slowing down. https://www.ifpi.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/IFPI_Global_Music_Report_2022-State_of_the_Industry.pdf And it's most likely done 17 billion since this report was published. Massive era!
JO BLACC Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 How can such a big album be such a non event no shade but something about her lacks.
RihFenty20 Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 Off topic but Adele’s numbers with only 2 months of tracking is kinda insane. Almost 5 mill pure in this economy is unheard of. No wonder her streaming numbers are horrible, the people that heavily rotate the album probably use their physical. OT: SMASH album. Streaming has really come a long way in such a short time. Those streams are as much as some act’s entire catalog streams

UnusualBoy Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 She was the biggest artist of last year and the album is still pulling numbers
BuzzCharts Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 A local, faceless artist did that ATRL boomers showing their age per usual. The album has been everywhere and Olivia has been collecting awards left and right.
KatyPrismSpirit Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 i need to know what type of sacrifice Interscope offered for this massive success
drivers license Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 not bad for a non-event faceless panned songstress that we will never hear in 2022 2023

Gerardo Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 This is huge, this also makes me wonder how many streams albums like DL, FN, TUN, WWAFAWFG, and other big female albums have

Exactly this. The media is very fragmented now. 1 hour ago, RihFenty20 said: Off topic but Adele’s numbers with only 2 months of tracking is kinda insane. I don’t need to be a little brat in order to see her as a huge artist. She lacks lots of things. Most members here have seen artists with Worldwide Domination from Adele, to Gaga to Ed, to Rihanna to Katy. She can’t even compared to half what those names have achieved.
Cutthroat Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 One of the best debut albums of all time tbh. Miss Rodrigo did what she had to do.

Does that help you make the connection? actually very interesting thing to point out. because, when i was young not all those artist that were mentioned blow up in a year timeline. World domination takes time. like, Rihanna wasn't at that level when she started. i feel like ATRL applying success of established acts to new acts is a flawed concept. during the days of MTV, everyone that is hot at the moment is just presented to everyone. hence why a lot of ATRLers are very knowledgeable with pop culture names. now kids would be like "Who is Avril Lavigne" "Janet Jackson??" but when we had MTV, we are exposed to even classics that came before our time. while this generation probably need to wait for a tiktok of them to casually show up or a trending news break out to learn about them. it is actually the same for me too now, if it's not something that's within my demographic, i'll probably never hear about it. hell, i was able to avoid that Dance Monkey song for a year. like below. 4 hours ago, MingYouToo said: she lacks the cross generational exposure (not appeal, two different things) because simply of how the market behaves now. no one who becomes mega famous in the streaming era penetrate markets the same level katy, gaga, beyonce, rihanna used to back in their hey days. streaming allows for listeners to be fractured from true mainstream music, social media aids in that echo chamber-ness too. if you like indie, you can tailor your entire internet experience to only expose you to fiona apple-adjacent artists, for hiphop it could just be 2chainz, jcole, etc. olivia targets the general young gen z demographic and along with the streaming gen/social media, she doesn't need/her platform isn't really accessible to the older gen and its why she doesn't feel like that kind of a celebrity.

abrahamjmr Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 Some must be really pressed to desperately trying to make Olivia seem as a faceless artists when she's quite popular among most. I remember when her album come out and people my age, in their late 20s, were tweeting about listening and enjoying SOUR.
